baileys conditioning cubes - a feeding question

in the real world...
following on from my previous post; in order to try and keep the weight on and stop Blue losing anymore condition, I changed his feed from;

1 level round scoop safe&sound
baileys lowcal
1 " scoop speedibeet
omega oils
carrots
adlib hay


to;
I have replaced the lowcal with baileys no4 conditioning cubes...... but I read on the bag you musnt exceed 1-2 level round scoops of feed per feed, inc any extra chaff etc. ? I worked out according to his weight and size I need to give him 1/2 scoop of cubes at each feed (am&pm), so does that mean I can only really give him 1/2scoop speedibeet and handful safe&sound to mix in with it?

Im not too sure but have always used baileys for condition both no 4 and outshine, if you phone them they are very helpful indeed
 
I was always told no more than 2kg per feed of concentrates Chaff is simply forage.... you wouldnt stop a horse from eating its haynet after its feed so I can't see it being any different, and if a horse bolts its food and needs max concentrates (eg mix/cube) then they are going to need the chaff to stop them choking :p

In an ideal world it should be little and often, but we dont live in an ideal world and have to make the most of what we have and do our best :D

i agree, ive started to use no.4 cubes too and feed my horse thats living out 1scoop of cubes,beet and chaff per day
 
thing is - it says on the back of the bag... feed no more than 4lb per feed inc added chaff etc.... having looked on the baileys website it explains that the stomach cant hold more than this amount of ANY feed and so more than that in one sitting gets pushed though the small intestine too quickly and is undigested and wasted. The cubes are a lot heavier than a mix, and ou should always feed by weight not volume it says. To get 1 feed under 4lb, i worked it out at 3/4 scoop cubes, handful chaff, handful speedibeet... as in just a covering at bottom of scoop.
 
ok, i spoke to Baileys and got advice from them:

a single feed sould not exceed approx 4lb, and if you are feeding cubes, they are a complete, balanced feed so should make up the main part of the feed. You can add chaff/beet etc if desired only for palatability or slowing chewing.. but the whole feed, inc chaff, shoudnt exceed 4lb. This is becasue, when mixed in with concentrate the chaff is eaten quicker. The nice lady i spoke to said if you want to feed more chaff than the 4lb allows, feed it in a seperate bucket AFTER the main feed, and they will munch on the chaff slower. She did say you will get into probs if you are feeding say; a scoop of cubes, 1/2chaff, 1/2 beet - its too much in one feed and it will be forced down the intestine too quick, can cause colic and other digestive upsets. 1 round scoop of cubes holds just under 4lb on its own!

anyway.. thats what they told me:)
 
Does Blue wolf his feed or does he go back and forth to it??

Kia goes back and forth and never eats it all in the one go unless its his summer feed and its practically nothing lol.:o

Either that or if he is in at night put some of his dinner dry into a snack ball and he can trickle feed out of that??

I have also done that with Kia to keep him amused when inside :)
