Although I joined the 'cantering again corner' sometime ago I have to confess that although happy to canter out on a hack I had an absolutely ridiculous fear of cantering in the schooling area I have made in my field:o Been flying along in there with all my trotting and transitions and progressed wonderfully with control in trot.

But......was just plain terrified to try him in canter - have thought this through and came to the conclusion that as it was breaking in and schooling a young horse many, many years ago, in the field, in canter that caused my back injury I think subconsciously the accident was coming back to haunt me!

So this morning I decided I would have to just b****y well go for it if I wanted to also sort out his breaks in the pelham when cantering. Cue much nervous hyperventilating, much effort to stop myself tensing up as tight as a drum - straight from walk, yay!!...correct leg. Only did a lap each time - but managed about 6 goes at it - not much brakes yet but managed the correct leg everytime - I was just so chuffed that I have conquered yet another of my many nervous phobias!

Pointless thread really as not a big deal for most of you but was for me!!!:D

Well done mrs - it's a big deal for most of us this cantering lark you know!! I think it's because the older we get, the more we worry about falling and hurting ourselves - we bounced when we were younger!! Even more of a worry if you've previously hurt yourself whilst cantering

:D:):D:)

Well done you!! I think it is indeed a triumph to canter esp if you have been having issues with the brakes. There is no going back now.:)

Its not a pointless thread cos it made a big difference to you. I have problems with cantering unless I'm going uphill cos of a riding accident several years ago. I suddenly realised I don't bounce.

Well done and its better to do baby steps with confidence than push yourself too far and go backwards. Er..if that makes sense lol

well done!!! i too had the 'too nervous to canter in the school fear' until fairly recently! I still prefer cantering out on hacks but in my lessons my RI has even got me and Moet doing 20m canter circles now!! Moet did do a little buck on Friday during our first canter. But i sat to it well and it didnt escalate into a bronking session luckily!!
