Sat at the shredder shredding at work and listening to the girl I work with winge about having to pay someone to take the shredded paper away we came up with a brain wave - use the paper for the horses beds. Now I will have to clear it with the farmer about putting it on the muck heap but is it really a bad idea!? Any one use it and what's the pros and cons.

I'm sat with some old copy's of user manuals, some cardboard and a poster or two. Would this shredded be suitable to use as bedding? I'm currently digging up and levelling my stable (it's just on hard core ATM!) to put rubber matting in it. Would it be possible to use the straw as Walls and the paper as bedding?

i used to use shredded paper on my rubber matting.

pros: free!

cons: looks messy if bits blown around the yard.

i found it quite absorbent and not too smelly. I used to use only a small amount where they would wee and they used to poo on the rubber matting space behind.

i would happily go back to paper...but current yard includes free straw so using that.

I used to shred everything, except any staples or anything too glossy.

hmm i did think about it blowing about but they are in an open ended barn and in like a large pen that is just seperated by boards either side that i plan to half (it was halfed but jazz used to jump through the boards :stomp::banghead: ) and is about the size of 3 12x12 boxes, so oh is going to put a gate in there to half it. however i could put some big boards if wood in there to make it more stable like.
anyway off the point haha!!

the cost of hay rising this year would be evened out by the free bedding. will have a word with the farmer tonight and see what he has to say about it

We use shredded , more like dices newsprint, it's great, I find shredded office paper unless it's the confetti type stuff balls up. The confettie stuff is great.....until you have a gust of wind and a full wheelbarrow!

Picking out feet in the morning can be fun, sometimes the newsprint sets like paper maché

I told not to use News paper for the inky print?! I have a grey who likes to have a lay down will I end up being able to read her!? And what's it like for warmth!

yeh we used to buy bales of ready shredded newspaper bedding, loved the stuff!

yeh we also used the cross shredded paper, the long spagetti type paper was annoying! lol!

dunno about the staining tbh...never noticed anything!

It is the confetti stuff. It's cross shredded so have started to shred everything in site and have given people strict instructions on what they can and can't shread!! I took a bag home and opened it up to see how much did how far and looked for staples (knowing I had put a few through) and couldn't find any. The shredder is pretty heavy duty tho - I think it has just totally killed them lol. I couldn't find one at all.

Although I am in a shredding war - someone wants it for the ferrets - he went mad when I took 4 bags to the car and didn't give him one!! I've been sat there for an hour mate!!!!!!!!!

We collect shredded paper from several local businesses for badding on rubber mats. Long stuff is difficult to handle, we find it bes to let it become a bit damp and then spread it putting more clean on top ( a bit like a semi deep litter straw bed). The cross cut is like handling shavings. Our best comes from local doctors and is shredded lightweight prescription paper!

It will drive you mad however if you like a swept perfect yard as it gets everywhere!!
