Hi folks,

Just wondering if anyone could recommend a good insurer. There are so many out there and all at very different prices. The ones I've looked at range from £24-£45. Do most people insure for £3K vet fees or go for the higher of £5k these days?
I've looked at horse-insurance.co.uk who gave me a quote for £24 for level 2 cover - just about most disciplines at novice level, 3rd party liability for £1.2million, Tack for £1500 and vets fees of £3k. Anyone know if they are any good and if so, have you made a claim - good to deal with? etc etc.

Pet plan appears to be extortionate. KBIS for the same level of cover is £42 a month and Stoneways is £36 a month. I'm going to phone NFU Mutual tomorrow for a quote. Anyone have any thoughts or experiences they would like to share with a new horse owner who has been out of the field for 10 yrs and needing some advice?

Thanks,

Esme

Horse insurance .co.uk is E&L, who have a bad reputation for paying out.

NFU do 5k vets fees as standard, and will not be the cheapest but that's who I am with, seib and kbis both also come recommended:smile:

Im with petplan as they have such a good rep. Seib wanted silly excess with the shetland as I only wanted vet fee's covered so cost was low. Friend had a few issues with them too.

E and l do have a bad rep and nfu were more expensive than petplan for both of mine.

Harvey is insured with Scottish Equestrian insurance and they have paid out several times now.

His premium is £24 a month but I put his market price at a low £950. We have up to 3k vets fees but also up to 1k for alternative thereapies and shoeing. He is insured through Julie Andrews Insurance Brokers (they don't charge extra and get good deals!) He is insured for all riding club activities

I've got Rosie with Petplan Equine. Comes in at £47.04 quid a month, £566.02 annually. Not the cheapest but I have heard they have a good reputation.

She's insured up to all riding club activities, group 3. I have my insurance in front of me, the details are:
Group 1; Retired horses, Breeding, Horses at grass.

Group 2, above plus Hacking, rides up to 25 miles, Western riding, Heavy horses.

Group 3 all of above plus Pony club activities(:giggle:) Vaulting (:giggle:) Le Trec, Gymkhana, Local shows, Riding club activities and schooling (Which confuses me a bit! Is riding in the school really more of a risk than a 25 mile ride?:frown:)

We don't really do that much other than hacking/sponsored rides but it means I can dip into something such a local show without worrying! Not that I have, yet.

She's insured up to £5,000 for vet fees with £135 excess.
Sum insured, £3,000 for death through injury or illness, theft or straying.

Nfu appear tO offer the most comprehensive but at 59 quid a month it's a bit steep. Going to wait on Julie andrews quote today. Allianz seems to be offering the best level of cover, reputation and value so far. Thanks for all your advice.

I have mine with insuremyhorse.co.uk owned and run by CETA Insurance Ltd, quotes are through Towergate AIUA I have never had to claim but have found them cheap.

I was recommended to get either NFU or petplan as they have a good rep for paying out....was told others can be awkward :frown:

Went for petplan, £36 a month but includes rider insurance....NFU was dearer.

I'm with KBIS for the shetland and with Petplan Equine for my cob. Haven't had a claim yet so not sure on how they pay out.

KBIS - very good at paying up.
Had one big claim in 2007 and in midst of another one with my yearling colt which they have been really good about so far. he has had to have a special hospital shoe put on as part of his treatment which is strictly not covered as it is 'alternative', but as it is necessary to protect the foot wound they are trying to persuade the underwriters to pay for it.

I'm with PetPlan for Ziggy and NFY for Mattie (through Mattie's owner).

Petplan are quite dear at £50 a month but I am covered for £5k vets fees and £2k loss of use. I am about to test their reputation with a claim for well over £6k!!!! :cold:

Ditto this, although my premium is cheaper. Petplan have paid out in the past for my dogs though. Freya is insured up to £5k vets fees but tbh I wouldn't insure any lower.
