My mare is known affectionately as a joke as my rottweiler :giggle: cos she protects me from other animals and people

She will chase other horses except her other half away from me and if riding alongside can do this too if they come to close and when I dismount I have to make sure not to close to friend's horse or she will warn it off

She is jealous of Annie but loves her when I am not there and chases dogs and cats away from me or watches out of reach with her ears back then huffs with me when I come to her.

Last night on my own at night at the yard I jumped cos thought something behind me and she turned round, moved me out of the way and faced the shadows with her teeth bared!

I was in stitches but I love her for her loony guarding of her mummy :inlove:

That's really sweet. Mine looks to me to protect her. More than once, she's tried to hide behind me! Which is laughable as I am quite a small female and she is half a ton of horse.

That sounds bad as in she attacks people....she doesnt lol but if they hurt me she probably would....

If just stood beside me she doesnt but if I show affection to another horse she chases it and if thinks the person is hurting me she will confront them

When I fainted on the ground infront of her stable she went mental and was really upset and trying to get over the door to me hubby said so he made me get up lol :giggle:

She will hide behind me sometimes but more if been naughty or silly whereas the gelding would practically jump into your arms like scooby doo

I don't think mine protect me, they tend to look to me for protection.

Cherie will protect other horses in her group though. For example if a stray dog comes in and tries to chase one of the less confident members, she will run after the dog, teeth barred....Its enough to send most dogs packing:giggle:

She has also paired up with my own dog to chase others out.

A friend of mine used to have a little Welsh section A, the grumpiest git you ever came across but one day her little girl was in the field and she had a fit and passed out. The little pony went and stood over her and neighed and neighed till someone noticed and came running.

I don't know if it's protection but Belle really gets upset if another horse tries to come to me, very cross ears flat back and swings her ample bottom in their direction, she's fine with other people though.

I don;t want any of my animals taking the law into their own hands and nipping, kicking biting or assuming I need their protection.

Joe used to protect me. Once I got chased by a herd of cows with calves - they were on my land, they shouldn't have been! Joe came hurtling down the field and put his ears back and barred his teeth at them to see them off.
Storm sees sheep and birds off! Lol but I'm not bothered about those....hehehe, the woolers are generally just hungry and looking for scraps!

I did not say she kicked.

I did not say she bites, I said chases away.

Yes she nipped once but only once a long time ago.

I feel you are very quick to jump and criticise me and my horses in all my posts.

Not the only one then :giggle:

I wondered was it more a mare thing but obviously not

Bud chases all the other horses away but we are actually trying to train him out of doing it, as he is so focussed on that, he has no idea that I exist or am there so he could hurt me by accident.

He is getting better but he is herd haunch and everyone obeys him. If he chases them, then he comes in last, if they are being caught and brought in one by one, or he is caught and made to watch everyone else go in loose, and then he brings up the rear.

He is a bit off riding out with other horses, doesn't like them near him, so he sulks and stays way behind them. I think he prefers going out on his own.

Yes my mare has learned too not to do it as much and she doesnt react when they pass her stable or of she passes them and they try to nip at her so she is alot better with her personal space issues. She never forgets about me being there thankfully as she is big and I am small lol.

She prefers being in front and isnt too keen being alongside unless her main buddy beside her and she isnt good in groups as gets excited and at the back she jogs and is a bit silly but infront she is a lamb. On her own she is grand but our gelding likes company.

Once when my other half whom she adores was messing about and shook me roughly by the shoulders she nipped him (just a back up warning nip nothing bad and not even so much of a nip really)

What you describe is bad enough, barring teeth, threats, pushing you about. Nope not the way I allow my animals to behave. If you take on at my reply maybe I got a bit near the bone!

I have never been in a situation where I needed my horse to protect me. If I feel threatened by another horse in the field, I will take action to protect myself and send the offending horse on their way. I think that humans need to be in charge at all times and the horses need to know this. Otherwise you could end up with a very unpredictable and dangerous situation if horses suddenly decided to take the law into their own hands.

Me too, I want to be the one in charge. One occassion my dogs went beserk at a bush in the park, hackles up, snarling the lot. There was a guy hiding in there so they found him and alerted me.
