What breeds other than Dartmoor ponies live on Dartmoor? I'm trying to narrow down what breed my pony could be?

Thanks

Years ago they had Shetlands to work down the mines.
If you bought your pony at the sales it's a Hill Pony.

When you first posted this you described him as spotty with a coloured tail and put a link to a pic (which didn't open). If you could put that description of him back up and especially a picture you might get more information. You did say you shared him - does your sharer have any clues? Or his passport?

Aren't the majority of ponies on Dartmoor just Heinz 57 ponies of a M&M type now. Does anyone put pure bred Dartmoors to the hills any more?

Maybe New Forest?
Do a couple of showing classes and see what the judges feel.
He's coloured?

How big is he? He's a nice looking boy. He might have Appaloosa in there somewhere but he doesn't have the striped hooves or the sclera around his eyes that he'd have to make him a proper pure bred Appaloosa. He also carries tobiano which isn't found in Appies. So yeah, Heinz 57 with some interesting bits thrown in. There was a fad a while back when certain breeders deliberately crossed pintos with Appies to get patches and spots and called them pintaloosas. They are just mongrels whatever you call them really. I have two mongrels!

British Spotted come in about that height, could there be a smattering of that in him?
It's a shame Dartmoor's as in pure bred Dartmoors are not in the hills any more. We are not allowed to put anything but pure bred Shetland ponies to the hill. And then you are not allowed to put any colts or stallions out without first consulting the grazings committee

British spotted seem to cover everything from spotty mini's to spotted cobs, so long as they are under 14.3hh. I've always thought of it as being a type rather than a breed as how can a breed be so diverse?

I'm never sure how to describe Peds, British spotted or Appaloosa X ? I think I've had him down as both in various places! I know I can register him British spotted just not on their main register as I don't know who his parents were or their breeding.

Go look at seeing spots' profile, he is on there.

I traced my 25 yr old Tb back to her breeder. It's fascinating.

It's weird to have no info, mine is part registered so Sire is known.

Mine are both of unknown breeding. But both had month and year but no actual day on their passports. How can you know how old a horse is if nobody knows who it's parents and therefore it's true date of birth?

It just means unregistered. You only have to record part bred or purebred. But every horse has parents and the person who bred that horse knows the date, year and month. I guess they just couldn't remember the day.

It says dam unknown on my passport. I know who has her, we just don't know what her breeding is. The person who bred her might do, but she isnt registered, so didn't get recorded.

When I traced my TB I only had her name to go on, I got her just as passports were being introduced so she had no info whatsoever. I discovered she had bred two foals, who they were etc, her life, what she had done etc. As I said fascinating.

We know nothing about our Jack either. His passport says IDx but it's a passport that was obviously made up as a 'best guess' when either it became law, or when he needed one to be sold etc. Several years were knocked off his age when they drew up the passport as well  The dealer we bought him from said he came from Ireland where he'd been hunting, and that's as much as we know. I'd love to find out more about where he's been, what he was like as a baby and what has happened to him during his life.
