It drives me potty! Why is the low sugar version always so much more expensive, I get those that use cheap ingredients/by-products are much cheaper but there are some things which are very similar within the same brand that are vastly different in price, 2 examples of things I brought recently; Emerald green grass nuts, the original is
£2 cheaper than the meadow nut at my local feed shop. And Dengie Alfa-A vs Dengie Alfa-A molasses free, same size bag and again
£2 more for the low sugar version  Its the same with human food too, tis bloomin annoying  Doesn't help that my local shop is pricey, next nearest one is a 25 mile trip though so I don't like to go unless I'm getting a few bits.

It drives me nuts too Jessey, anything at all that is perceived to be 'healthy' be that human or horse is always more expensive than the full fat/sugar/whatever version.
It's the same with any kind of face cleanser/cream/cosmetics too, the stuff I have to use because of my skin is the gentlest, next to nothing 'added' and yet it's twice the price of everyday stuff which is full of extra's including perfume!

It's annoying, all mine are on low sugar starch and it's hard to find stuff that doesn't cost an arm and a leg. The two donkeys are out 24/7 and just get D&H Lite Balancer, no feed. the others get Lmix and some balancer and buddy has Veteran Lite added to it

That's the only feed mine get, plus a bit of linseed and salt, at least those are cheap!

Don't even talk to me about balancer, took Jess off the normal pelleted type that was only £25 a month and put her onto a super spec one for her feet which was £60 a month  I've now switched to one that's high spec ingredients but only has the bits I really need in it and its only £21/month, fingers crossed it doesn't see her feet going down hill or we will have to go back to the expensive one.

I get through one bag of balancer in about 10 days but that's buddy, fleur, tintin, aimee, krug and murphy all having it. the one i have is £18 a bag. I managed to get a load of the topspec one in the autumn half price, next year will buy a pallet of it when they reduce it.

I get it being more expensive when you have to supplement an ingredient with one that is more expensive, but when it's just a matter of leaving out the cheap ingredient why does it cost more?

Because it can, because fundamentally business want to cash in on those of us looking for healthy stuff either for us or our animals, so even if it’s cheaper to produce they can mark it up because of the demand for it. Stinks, but that’s business economics for you.

I can't say I'd really noticed, but then a sack of feed lasts me ages so I probably don't pay that much attention, plus my main concern alongside reasonably low sugar (i'm not fanatical about it being below a certain % since I feed so little) is avoiding alfalfa/Lucerne and that's often trickier.
