He came from a rescue my friend ran in Kent. When I lost Bo I put a plea on Facebook to borrow a pony to keep Jess company as she was left alone and they offered me Hank. You’d never believe now he was dubbed the most aggressive animal they’d ever had, he’s been a dude from the day he arrived with me
Aggressive??? Hank?! I am amazed. He must have just hated the rescue, or been really traumatised
Apparently even just leading him was a hat, gloves and wits job, he’d rear launching and biting going for the neck. He improved when gelded and when they got his face healed up (his teeth were so bad he had holes right through his cheeks that you could fit fingers through) but was still aggressive.
I struggle to imagine it but trust my friends reports and she’s a professional horse trainer who’s rescued 100s of colts on the side so I doubt it was anything they did. It’s believed he was raised in someone’s back garden, not socialised, and then passed from pillar to post. Poor sod.
I didn’t ask anything about him when I got him (I was devastated over Bo and just needed a companion), I just bought him home and got on, my friends face when I said he’d been giving kids pony rides a few weeks later was utter shock and fear for the kids. Jess did square him up in no uncertain terms, having someone to mother him probably helped loads.
Goodness, he did get lucky, both with you and with having jess to show him in no uncertain terms how to be a horse. Poor little bugger. And he pulled a chariot through the streets of London town!
Well Niko is growing like a blooming weed, I’m going to put the height stick and weight tape on him this weekend to see how much.
He’s been a bit of a sod this week, we have no mans land between mine and my friends horses but he loves playing with them in the one corner they can touch noses and the solar controller gave up the ghost and the battery went flat so he went through the fence on Wednesday, his rug and fly mask were both shredded from the games and I had no tools with me so put the fence back up and
. He’d gone through again yesterday, tools in hand I powered it up and . Today he’d gone through again but obviously got a bloody zap because he went back to Hank through a post and rail section 
battery completely dead as the power wire was laid on the floor and I’m working tonight so bodged it all back together in a hurry and am going to take the big jolt energiser from home and a fresh battery to hopefully cure that in the morning!

They learn when its off. Fleur cow went through last week. Fence was off, only ment as a blind. She'd beenn in the yard and sheep pens, leaving her calling card. Put her back in she did it again. So i powered it and zapped across her back with it when i tried to put her back in. Hasnt gone through since and its been back off for several days. Bugger me i looked down the field yesterday and shed gone through the hay fence this time, which is the lower part of the field. That ones not live. It doesnt matter that she was in there but poor Jam and Damsel were miffed they couldnt join her. So ive let them through to join Fleur tonight. Doubt Fleur will go walkies now shes got a few acres of fresh grass to munch through. But even the cows test it.
I’m very grateful the only casualty was his rug!

So it looks like there was a small injury, I couldn’t work out yesterday morning why Hank was fussing and licking Niko’s white hind, he’d do it till Niko wandered off then follow to lick some more and it went on the whole time I was there. Niko had walked through the muddy gateway so I missed the scrape across the back of his pastern until today, hopefully it’s nothing too drastic as I didn’t even have any clean water to give it a clean up but slathered with sudocrem as I had that on hand and it didn’t feel bad.
I don’t know where Hanks fascination with blood comes from, I’ve never known a horse like it before, a question for my vet perhaps
Niko had a little lunge tonight, just 4 minutes of walk and trot and yielding to change direction, which was all really soft and lovely. Then I popped his bit in and did another minute, he was a bit gobby but very good about it considering it’s only the 2nd time he’s had the bit in

Something prompted me to Facebook stalk Niko’s breeder and I’ve found lots of baby pictures
About the blood. It could be the salt in it. Like a salt lick.
It is also possible (I dont know) that horses will lick a wound because their saliva will kill some germs. Human saliva does and may envcourage clotting

He’s got salt licks and gets salt in his feed so I doubt he’s lacking. Horses don’t tend to lick wounds like dogs/cats, he also went a bit nuts for the blood on the floor and hay boxes when Jess bled profusely after a difficult tubing so I don’t think it’s about the wound itself.
Dr green has definitely been the ticket, suddenly he looks less baby weedy and more of a strapping young lad

Took the boys out for a 45 minute walk yesterday. Niko’s confidence is booming, a new route to him and no hesitation, he’s really enjoying the forest now 
I had to laugh when he tried to snatch a branch and when he let go it pinged back and slapped him on the bum making him jump
He did superbly with cars doing 60mph, we were on a track parallel to the road and about 15ft back, and he didn’t bat an eyelid. And that’s the 4th bitting and longest he’s had it on for and he seems happy with it.

This lad just gets better with every interaction, lovely walk today through the forest and we had about 150 yards of 60mph road to get back into the village, blow me if a bloody bus doesn’t come along in those seconds! Niko really couldn’t have given two hoots
