Harvey is settling in well and now starting to test me.
I rode him in the school on Saturday morning with no issues, but then on the way back to his stable he refused to cross the drain channel on the yard. So we had a patience test - every time he tried to turn away I stopped him, otherwise he got to stand on a loose rein. After a few minutes he got bored and walked on when asked.
In the afternoon we hacked round the same 3 mile route as last week. He was much more forward going and confident this week, although we did meet an Asda van doing a home delivery which I didn't manage to get past. We stood and watched until it moved off. He'll get better as he gets to trust me - I don't think he has hacked out alone much before.
On Sunday I took him in the jumping paddock which caused much excitement - he obviously thinks jumping is a fun thing (which is good). We just did some 12" crosspoles from trot and then an 18" upright. He has a tendency to run at fences so I want to stop that from day 1, which seems to be working so far. I wanted to do more but it started pouring with really cold rain which neither he, I or my pole picker thought much of. I decided to do one more fence from canter and then call it a day so a choose a small gate which he jumped nicely. I went back to measure it later and found it was 2' 6" so I am quite pleased with that.
He is out of quarantine now so on Sunday he was turned out with the (small) herd and I moved him into his permanent stable. He had no issues with either - he seems to take everything in his stride.
Sorry no pictures yet - I'm not quite ready to take my hands off the reins for that long. Its not that he does anything - I just want to be ready if he does!
