Does anyone have any experience of using a 3.5 tonne box for a big horse? Like a sort of 17-17.2hh middleweight type? A friend of mine is looking at options for boxes and likes the look of mine but is bothered about size and weight etc. I've only ever travelled up to 15.3 in mine and that's about the limit, but mine is a van conversion, not a box type body. Would the bigger versions be a sensible option, given they will only be travelling a single horse, especially as the bigger versions have reduced payloads?

my yard owners got a 3.5 and we can fit another liveries big 17.3 in fine.Ive never actualy seen him in it mysefl but they've been places in it so he must be more than fine to travel in it :)

Equitrek Sonic is OK for a 16h3 ish warmblood type plus one smaller. Not tried it with two large ones but as long as they weighed less than 1.5 tonnes total I am sure it'd be fine.

Horses in Motion in Salisbury have a Renault 3.5t built by Galloper Horseboxes in Tisbury. I have seen a 17.3 in it and it fitted fine and he says he had a horse of 700kg in it at one time.

Always be aware of the payload on 3.5t vehicles as people forget to take into account the weight of all the other stuff they carry including themselves.:)

Just a note the Equitrek Sonic only has a capacity of 1080kg an by thje time you get in and all the horse stuff gets added I wouldn't carry more than 600kg of horse.

That is the problem I think, more so than the physical will the horse fit. I know on my box the payload is only about 1200kg, so I try to keep to about 800kg of horse. The bigger boxes are heavier, so I reckon your estimate of 600kg is about right. And that doesn't get anwhere near a large 17.2 imo.

I know that professional transport companies do use these boxes and carry large horses in them, without seeming to be worried about weight limits  Do they get them uprated to 3.9 tonnes, as I'd assume that's the only way of being sure? Or do they assume that they're not carrying all the associated equipment, so they effectively have more horse room (like up to 800kg or so?)
