Well I am having my 3rd lesson today and with a different RI as my one only works specific days. Going to ask to work on the sitting trot as thats my problem at the mo - maybe I'll earn something new fro this RI about it! Taking in everything everyone has advised me on here.

Its at 3pm so wish me luck.

Yes I am feeling better thanks.

My original RI said I may learn new exercises from this RI and said she is good so it may be benificial so looking forward to it.

Thanks guys, I'll let you know how it goes after - may be going to someone from works yard to meet their horse after so may not be able to post straight away.

Right then Im home - new RI and rode a different horse!

Firstly the new RI is older and a bit scarey but she is was great.

The new horse (Apollo) was 16.1 but I really thought he was a lot smaller - the RI said he is the same hight as the other horse (Becky) I rode but Becky was a Irish Draught and this horse more TB cross, what she said before we got started when I explained my problem with sitting trot is that Becky is a lot bouncier and her neck is a lot higher and this horse Apollo is more like a pony and the neck is a lot lower! If that doesn't make sense I am sorry but it did when I sat on Apollo.

Straight away the new RI pointed out I needed to lean back slightly more and raise my hands up more. When I did this I did feel more secure in the saddle.

Apollo felt a lot different in rising and sitting trot and the only way I can describe it is that she felt like she has shorter strides.

I found sitting trot a lot easier on Apollo and especially leaning back slightly.

Going into canter I didn't quite get again sitting as because this RI pointed out earlier I needed to sit more and this time I felt where I was going wrong.

Even though my seat is fine, she said I need to leaning slightly more back and shorten my reins as I am letting the horse bear more down on his front legs and I am going with himm thus falling forward and loosing slight balance. Raising my hands and shortening the reins I felt a lot more contact too.

Sorry if I am not making sense but the lesson ended up with me realising that my weight had been slighty off and changing it and coming to corners I could feel more in control. I wished I had another half hour straight after to concentrate more on the sitting trot to canter transition but I feel that with the next lesson I can work on what I have learnt today straight away and the next lesson sort going into canter more.

I have asked for either Becky or Apollo on the next lesson and will apply this to either - both being very different horses. I would like to have gotten on Becky straight away to see if changing my seat slightly helped with sitting trot with her but that will have to wait.

I did definately find that concentrating on sitting upight and slightly more leaning back and shortening the reins and raising my hands did help with everything and sitting trot.

Sounds like its going well, I'm sure with a few more lessons you'll be popping into canter with ease :D

Its amazing how different each horse you ride feels isn't it.

I have ridden for years but had a phase of only hacking out so also got into the standing slightly in stirrups and leaning forward habit for cantering - I also get a bad back at times so it was more comfy that way.

When I started having lessons again, I felt like I was leaning waaaay back when I was where my RI said I needed to be! You do get used to it though!

Oooh i'm so envious. You do trot & canter after 3 lessons!!

Thanks for your words of encouragement on my thread.

Glad you're getting to grips wth things so well:D

Well done you!

when my RI first told me to sit back, I too felt I was gonna look a loon leaning back ~ but then she took some photos, and I realised I wasn't really leaning back ~ just sitting very upright!

Therefore, I must ride like an foetus normally! :D

You'll soon get there ~ well done again!

Therefore, I must ride like an foetus normally! :D

I thought that too :D

Thanks guys, I know that riding is a constant learning thing and that even the top top TOP riders still learn but what I have found that is really nice is applying what I am properly learning to what I learnt years ago on hacks - its like "fine tweaking" and feels good!

Well done, it sounds like you're doing well and that you have a thirst to know the "why's" of what you're doing. That's always a good thing as it will make you a better rider. :)
I had a 10 yr break after never really learning the "correct" way to ride as a kid and it's taken me 4 years to get to a stage where i'm happier about my riding but then i'm quite hard on myself.
What i will say from reading your other post as well is don't expect too much to begin with and don't worry if it doesn't all fall into place straight away. Ten years is a long time and it can take weeks, months or even years to get everything to click into place. Just let it come naturally and don't worry too much. My last instructor was a concentrate on walk, then trot and then when everything else fits start on canter type of person. That approach def. worked for me, might not for others though.
