Hi folks. I think I have actually found a solution to those evil horsefly bites.
Whenever I get them its the same, they are really irritating until I give in and scratch them, then they become a MILLION times worse. They swell up, drive me insane (well, more than normal ) then go oozy and infected.
I got bitten yesterday and tried everything to stop myself from scratching it, even waking up in the night several times. I tried bum cream (can't spell haemerroids ?) as it has a local anaesthetic but it wasn't strong enough.
Then I remembered looking after little jewish baby who was having his circumcision. They put a cream on his willy and wrapped it in cling film, and didn't feel a thing and they use it in hospitals to put on childrens skin before injections.
Went to boots, described the cream (couldn't remember the name) and they found it.
It is called EMLA cream and is Lidocaine and Prilocaine and is non prescription.
I put some on the bite, stuck on a little square of cling film and HEY PRESTO , NO ITCHING !!!!!! The relief is wonderful.
Will see if the cling film stays on when I start moving around but if not I'm sure I can find somneway of making it stay put (I'll use duct tape if I have to !!) Instructions say to use an occlusive film dressing but don't know what that is.
Hope this helps xxx

Ah... its always helps the itch for me... our are bad bad horse flies!

I am off to find the stuff you have...have a nasty one on wrist that's not itchy but painful...

Thanks dfg,i always have trouble with the blessed things if they bite me.Swells up then a blister appears which bursts leaving a crater which develops another blister which bursts, this repeats several times & end up with a scar.Do think I probably scratch it when sleeping & anthisan is useless on them. Now where did hubby put his lidocaine cream.

Bloody pesky things aren't they?! They sneak up on me, I never notice them until its too late and I've been knife and forked by 'em!!! Know just what you mean about them itching and then swelling - horrible. Thanks for the tip about the cream!

Another sufferer here! Get hoooge reactive itchy lumps sometimes up to 15cm long, so I'll definitely try that, thanks :)

Oooh, I didn't know you could get that over the counter! I've had it in hospital, put on the area they're going to stick needles in me so I don't feel a darn thing... :D Brilliant stuff!

Be wary , localised skin reactions sometimes occur with EMLA - redness and irritation among them, so with a horse fly bite you wont know which is which.

Benadryl ointment works very well too

Horse fly bites are so horrid - the last one I had made half my leg swell up and turn purple I was convinced I was going to have to have it amputated (OH thinks I'm a drama queen but I'm sure it came close.....). I think scratching is what made it turn funny, so great tip.

I was bitten on my upper arm on friday and been in agony all weekend. Five of them got my legs last week too so I'm sweltering and covering up. I am allergic to Anthisan but definately going to try EMLA. I took a photo of one and it looks like they have 2 dagger like incisors.

I got bitten by a horse-fly a couple of weeks ago on the arm. It caught it in the act so wasn't too bad, but did put something called 'Stingose gel' on it, which I purchased in Australia while on holiday last year.. if anyone here has ever visited sandy parts of Oz and been bitten by sand-flies they will know the pain
Anyway, the stingose in a tube is white and dries on the skin, covering up the bite and soothing it. Me and my OH got dozens of sand fly bites and it was the only thing that made the horrendous itch bearable!!
Pretty sure you can get the spray version of it here in the UK now :)

The other thing that really works are Compeed plasters, the opaque ones for blisters.
The Emla cream was working well but found the bite was still getting a bit itchy if anything touched it, even lightly e.g bedding, so I washed all the cream off(so the plaster could stick) then placed a tiny bit of cream on bite and put plaster on. The medium plasters are quite big and covered well, hardly showed, stayed on well for 4 days(even with baths) and I swear, I never felt the bite once. It was like it never existed and faded away to nothing.
You have to get this done BEFORE you scratch the top off but WOW !!
I only wish I could do the same for horses poor things xx
