Ive just had some hay delivered to my barn and was told 11% of it was aflalfa. Im going to cut back my grain considering alfalfa has a lot of protein. Is there anything I should be cautious about...or am I just over worrying?
Lucky you! I presume this means you've received mixed hay not that 11% of the bales are pure alfalfa (lucerne). Feed as normal and don't worry. Meadow hay should be part clover - up to 30% on good pasture so having 11% lucerne in your hay is not really any different. As with any feed simply adjust the amount based on your horse's condition.
Do you mean 11% of each bale has alfalfa mixed in? Or that 1 out of every 10 bales is alfalfa?
Alfalfa is higher in protein but not really a big source of lots of simple starches/sugars (like feed/grain). I don't think you'd need to reduce your grains much if at all, but I'm curious to see what others think.
