Alternating RIs

After worrying about which instructor I would have now my RI is on holiday, my mind was put at rest today by yet another fantastic RI. I wonder if I could alternate instructors each week or would that be cheeky? I have learnt different aspects of riding today which really benefitted me.

Hey, it's your decision! They'll both still be getting your business but you benefit from different people - I don't think it's cheeky at all and surely any decent instructor would see the benefit in that too??

Maybe eml will disagree though?!

I don't see why it should be a problem, as you say you learn different things from different people. In fact if a RI was so controlling that they objected to me using someone else as well I think I'd start to wonder if that was the sort of person I wanted to be working with.

Generally a good idea provided both RIs are working on different things!

I can see potential issues however if say you are working with a young horse and instructors have totally different approaches which may result in confusion for you and the horse.

Thanks for the replies.

For the first few lessons I rode two different horses but now they seem to put me with just one who is about 17 years old and about 16.2 hh. I will certainly bear that in mind if they put me on a younger horse though. Thanks Eml.

I have two instructors. Ones is really young and a natural intuitive horsewoman. She does BE and motivates me to aim for the same lol, but her confidence in my ability works wonders and she has transformed my riding, especially jumping.

The second, my favourite instructor from our RS, knows me and particularly Max inside out and shows me how to get the best out of him.

So one RI for me, another for my horse. Each is happy with the lesson I get from the other

That is really interesting, thanks for the comment. I will suggest it next time I go.

If you find you're benefitting from both, have lessons with both - why not? You're the customer, and you're paying your hard earned money for their skills and expertise.

As eml says - as long as they have a similar overall approach but different focus points, it should be fine. I actually encourage my students to also take occasional (or regular) lessons one particular other instructor, as she often sees things I have missed in the seat and balance department. We're a bit like Pepsimaxrock's team - I come at it from the horse's point of view, she comes at it from the rider's point of view - and the two work well together.

Oh well, I went for my lesson today only to find that my RI is leaving the school! She is a great RI and I'm really quite sad about it. My mind has been made up for me but it would have been nice to have a choice.

Oh that is a shame! I know from experience, it's not always straightforward to find a replacement. At least there is another suitable candidate in your alternate RI.

Can you find out where this one is going and follow?

Do you think you will still want to have two and try somewhere else? It's not a done deal that you have to stop with the one school...though actually thinking about it you'll not be getting complementing teaching as one won't know what the other has done...mmm shame.

Hi Calluna

Unfortunately she is taking a break from teaching so not going anywhere else. I will see how it goes and assess the situation later. Would like to stay with the RS because it is only 5 miles from me. However, I am looking up different workshops and RIs who provide professional services and workshops so hopefully that will keep me busy! :skip:

So it could be an opportunity then...I had a peeved and disgruntled break from lessons after carefully selected RI left and other staff just did not match up and am now fortunate in a super RI but at a different school.
It was interesting, different school meant completely different yard atmosphere - noticeably calmer and so a better learning environment i think, but I probably wouldn't have gone looking if it hadn't been forced on me.
Hope you get on well with your explorations.

Thats great to hear. I really don't want to give up on the RS because they really have treated me very well but when needs must, as they say! A different approach is what I was after initially on this thread so I need to focus on that rather than how much I will miss the RI! Thanks for the replies. Its appreciated Calluna. xx
