Any good long waterproof riding coats that you can recommend, and waterproof trousers

I'm thinking of getting a long waterproof riding coat, as we have so much rain these days. If I want to ride regularly, I'm going to have to accept riding in the rain some of the time.

Does anyone have a good long riding coat, that keeps them dry, and isn't too restrictive? I'm not sure whether to get a waxed one or a microfibre type fabric.

If you have a long riding coat, please tell me your experience of them - advantages and disadvantages, and what they're like to ride in.

I'm also wondering about waterproof trousers as well, in case a long coat isn't such a good idea. Are there good brands out there which are comfy to wear over jodhpurs, and aren't too slippery to ride in?

Thanks in advance.

I had a long riding coat but hated it! I found it restrictive and it got in the way.

I have a Mountain Horse body guard now and love it, it's waterproof and keeps my bum dry.

I use Mountain Horse full chaps but find them a bit slippery, my mum has a pair of Shires full chaps that are made from the same material as turnout rugs and I find those less slippery, I steal them occasionally.

I have a Jack Murphy coat which is just below knee length. It's fab!! It has tabs to fasten round your legs when you ride to stop it being like a cape :giggle: and is waterproof and windproof :D

You cant beat a full length Driza Bone (they Australian ones) They cover every inch of you and the saddle, wind cant cut through them, but they are quite heavy to wear. Unless you are intending to do many hours and long distances in the saddle then I would think a synthetic lighter one would be better.

I have the Jack Murphy long ish one, it's just comes to my knee - I love it for riding in and for yard work. It's great as I am as happy as Larry doing my jobs in the winter now, I always wear long boots anyways - so I am dry enough! Great to ride in - because I bought a larger size than I normally do I put another coat on underneath (usually my Toggi padded jacket) and I'm snug as the proverbial bug.........
I also have a Shires long one - but, that isn't my fav for riding in, it's a bit too long and I feel like one of those medieval extras from a Henry the eighth film.....with it all fanned out on Storm's back, but it flaps as well, and can become quite scary for her.......!!!!

Thanks peeps, you are such a helpful bunch. The Jack Murphy ones sound as if they might fit the bill. I've looked them up and they do several different long waterproof coats, so I'm not sure which ones you have got. Do you know the name of them, or if not could you tell me roughly how much they cost so I can perhaps go by that?

I have the full length Jack Murphy and its fully waterproof. My friend bought one and washed it several times and its letting in water now.
I only use non bio to ash it though. Smells a damn sight better than a waxed jacket thats for sure. I used to keep one in the boot of my car years ago and cant stand the smell of them now.

I've got a pair of cheapy waterproof trousers, they're made of a waxy kind of material, and not at all slippery in the saddle, I can't remember where they're from but if you have a chance then go to an outdoor/camping shop and have a feel of the waterproof trousers that are they're ones of a sort of waxy material should be fine.

I have an old style (might still be the unisex style they have) Musto full length coat and love it - I do struggle to school in it but for hacking it's perfect. It keeps the bulk of the saddle dry which also means you don't get a wet posterior  - sitting on a wet saddle will eventually cause trousers to wet out.

For the lady whose coat has lost its waterproofness you can just wash in Nikwax or Grangers treatments. They are best washed in special wash for waterproof garments, even gentle detergents can be an issue, though there is a theory now that extra rinsing can help with waterproofness - is is the trace of detergent still in the garmet that apparently causes the loss of waterproofing.

Yes, I've got waterproof trousers from camping shops and I tend to chop 'em up! Lol, I must look a sight....thing is, they're too darned long and if I roll 'em up I end up with them snagging or collecting straw.....then when they unfurl.....you can guess what happens! Straw all over the place - specially in the kitchen! Well, I cut them up and made some abominations (that's what OH calls them!) but they do the trick if it's really wretched rain wise! That coupled with my long boots keeps me dry and the coat of course.

I have a dryzabone - a lovely coat indeed, but I cant ride in it as intended.
So a word of warning to other women about any long riding mac.

They have straps to go round the rider's legs, to stop the coat ends from flapping up and down on the horse, if you go fast.
These straps come at the wrong height for the legs of a shortish woman like me - they come too low, can be restricting, and even interfere with mounting.

The staff at a yard where I ride are issued with long macs of a lighter brand. So I enquired last week, hoping the problem might have been solved, but my escort told me she had the same problem and rode without fastening the leg straps - something she could do only on horses who wouldnt be spooked by the ends of her mac flapping on them.

If there is anyone here less than 5 ft 4 inches tall, with a long riding mac broad enough to go round their hips AND short enough to fasten properly round their legs, please post the brand name.

I cant offer any advice on the long coat but I have Musto Elite waterproof trousers. They are really comfy and flattering too! I bought them before I did my coast to coast ride across Scotland and believe me... they passed the test

I have two long coats, one wax one microfibre..........I LOVE my long wax coat and tbh its YEARS OLD:smile:

I have never had a problem with it spooking a horse tbh and have never used the leg straps on either:wink:

I have a 3/4 length EquiTheme microfibre coat - £55 new (got it in a sale for £25!! :bounce:) It's light and easy to ride in, and keeps me and my saddle dry.

I also ride in a Shires Flourescent padded, waterproof winter coat and Rambo winter waterproof, fleece-lined full chaps - which are totally watertight, however, I find that the rain drips off my jacket onto my saddle and I end up with a wet bottom, and the rain also runs off my sleeves onto my gloves and soaks them, so make sure you have good waterproof gloves....

Out of the two, I prefer my 3/4 length! :smug:
