Are connemara's good weight carriers ?

I always thought they weren't very good weight carriers, but I'll probably be proved wrong. I thought Arabs were weedy little things too until I came on this board

I wouldn't call my pure connie a weight carrier :o

I weigh 115lb/ just over 8 stone and he carries me fine. he could carry more than that but still not a 'weight carrier'.

my friend who is 5ft 7 and 12 stone had a sit on him

I would not put 14 stone on him. he has a short back and wouldn't take a big enough saddle for a start and I'd say 12 stone is his limit just for a little sit :o he shot off when my friend got on for a little test ride! he's not used to carrying more than me really an sometimes I feel too big for him, I know logically I'm not though!

Saying that I have seen MUCH stockier connemaras :)

no, not a weight carrier like the other natives. imho they arent like the other natives at all, infact i know several people who dont think they should be classed as such.. there are a lot over over height connies being used as sport horses. mine has some tb in him so not a great example, he's about 15hh, in saying that im often asked if he some arab in him! and i have seen some pure connies that are built like tanks - but they just dont have the bone that a highland, fell, welsh D or decent cob has...

mikh also makes a very good point about being short backed... mine is in a 16.5inch saddle and id be struggling to go up from that. im only 5ft3 and 8 stn:o

BW you took the words out my mouth, no they aren't at all. They are compact sport horses, my vet thinks Polo may have connie in him, but who knows he's just a grey cob to me. Most connies ride like ponies due to being short and compact, they often do well as a cross breed (connie x tb) make good but small eventers. They are more hardy than your TB, WBs etc but not as hardy as your dales, fells, highlands etc.

They are defo one of my fave breeds though!

id say no, as they are good jumping ponies so if you have one for this perpos then u wouldnt what a heavey weight on it whilst jumping

I have a 15hh(ish) connemara x thoroughbred. She *looks* quite LW but actually has 8.5" of bone and takes an XW saddle even at her fittest - 17.5" long.
Id happily sit a well balanced 13-14 stone (ish) person on her ... theyd have to be well balanced though, shes too nippy to take an unbalanced rider!!! :D

She is a sports horse though, very nippy and quick, would make a fab polo/horseball pony i swear, turns on a six pence, jumps like a stag, and does a cracking dressage test. But, a true to type conny is a good allrounder and can do quite literally, everything!!!

I weigh about 10 stone and am 5ft8/9ish (not been measured since i was about 14ish!) and she never complains about my weight, and shes technically half tb!!!

Us recently at a dressage comp (she hadnt competed at dressage in a year and hadnt been ridden for about a month or so due to exams!)

Ive also ridden my RIs pure conny and he is much much chunkier than she is, and seems much hardier. Hes also probably a hand or so smaller though!

I have a 15hh Connemara cross who is most definatley a weight carrier. He is a LW show cob (dictated to be able to carry up to 15 stone by the BSHA).
