Things have improved for me alot since having my tonsils out but I still get chest infections more than the average person I think.

Anything you eat or take that you recommend?

Had a chest infection in Dec, Feb, May and now Sept. This one hasn't been as bad as the others but still going strong a week in.

I don't have any nutritional advice other than try and eat a well balanced reasonably healthy diet. The other source of bugs of course is through touching stuff, so I recommend using anti bac gel as much as you can whilst out and about, because it is very easy to infect yourself inadvertantly by rubbing eyes, touching mouth etc. Franklly, it always annoys me too how people with colds want to share them, why don't they keep it to themselves!!! The other thing I found was that when I ate lots of garlic I caught less. Lol maybe because people were repelled by the smell:pand didn't come too close!!!!!
I hope your current infection goes pronto!!

They say lots of fruit and veg. Varied diet. Some take additional vitamin c.
Your own personal hygiene is always key. I know one or two people who lets just say there not the cleanest and they always having colds etc. There is of course the other way of looking at it. Like i'm always doing stuff round the farm and usually you end up wiping my face with dirty hands so am so exposed I'm immune to lots of bugs.

I can't recall when I last had a chest infection. Though I probably wouldn't know the symptoms.

I drink water and have decafe coffee.
Eat balanced diet, good week/ crap weekend. My definition of balanced.
Get a good night sleep, sort the temperature, black out blinds, etc.

I use Echinacea from October but I am fussy where I get it. Not to everyone taste but I use homeopathy as well as herbs.

How are you in yourself. If you feel low or drained you are popping a bugs welcome flag up.

My OH and a friend have had colds too. This is the time of year. Small children start Primary school or Secondary school and encounter lots of germs they havent met before and they bring the infections home to their mothers who go shopping and pass it on in supermarkets, buses etc. It is worse if you still have children living at home. And by the way, if like us, you have young people off to uni, make sure they are immunised against meningitis.

Thanks everyone for the advice.

I eat well, ish. Lots of fruit and veg, every other day I will cook something fresh from scratch and the other day I'll have some frozen chicken or fish fingers with lots of veg. I eat too much bread but don't think that's the cause.

I'm a clean person but I've never liked the idea of hand sanitizer, might invest in some however see if it helps. On one side I'm always washing and cleaning at home as I don't like a mess but then I'll be down the yard all day getting mucky so best of both works I think :)

Maybe it's just the cycling which means I breathe more things in that other people

Yes I seem to have permanently grubby "yard" hands - grubby to look at maybe? But not to me. There are far more germs on "clean" looking hands on people in supermarkets etc. I have caught less (touch wood) this past ten years through spending more time outdoors and not having central heating. We have it now, but I am scroogy with it for good reason!

Have you had the flu jab Ale? I've not had one before, but having to get one this year. Not looking forward to it, but it's supposed to really help.

My BF is considered high risk due to a genetic condition. It's the first year we've been basically living together during flu season and I'm having to be so careful, as giving him a cold could be (worst case scenario) life threatning.

I've always had pretty good immunity but am now taking a vitamin C supplement every day. I'm trying to eat lots of vegetables or fruit with vitamin C in too - so kale, brocolli, oranges, tomatoes and berries were all recommended to me.

I pretty much don't go anywhere without antibacterial gel and I've swapped our hand soaps for an antibacterial type too.

I try to keep windows open where possible too - so instead of turning on aircon when driving, I'll open a window. Same at work.

Drinking lots of water & getting lots of sleep helps too, apparently!

Fingers crossed we all get through flu season unscathed :)

And I heard on the radio this morning that if you have the flu jab, it is statistically significantly more likely to produce loads of antibodies if you are in a good mood on the day you have the injection. Nobody knows why but it is. So get happy when you get that jab!

Interesting Jane!

I'm terrified of needles, so I'll do my best to be in a good mood instead of petrified.

Lots of encouraging vibes. Getting a flu jab is the BEST thing I've discovered health wise this past few seasons. My OH has an immune disorder and asthma so autmatically gets one, but I try and get one too as I need to stay fit to do the horses and look after him if his long term condition flares up. Just look the other wau or think about something happy like Pete and your last lovely ride. It will be done in no time.xxx

You can get bugs all year. If you go on holiday you will not have been exposed to the local bugs. And you are bringing yours with you, similar to what skib mentions.
All our lovely tourists bring bugs we haven't been exposed to.

Not sure on all this hand gel stuff. Washing our hands and not touching your face so much would help. You could end up worse if you can't fight anything off.

Yet the hospitals, health centres and dental surgeries all provide hand gel. I don't think it's a bad thing if it prevents me from catching something because I use it. It's too easy to push a trolley that the previous persons touched and infected and then go and rub your eyes or completely forget and eat something whilst out without remembering to wash hands. (Assuming you don't like using public toilets which I don't unless I have to). Of course you can never stop that person who sits behind you on the plane or bus coughing and spluttering and sneezing..........(maybe they could pass a law that you have to wear a mask in public?!!!!)

LOVE IT!! :);):D

I have also heard kids carry lots of germs home from school. Thanfully I don't have that problem.

I try to be really careful in public areas. If I see someone visably sick in the line in front of me I will go to
another register. I cant know the people I have not seen go thru but I can avoid as much as possible
people I do see.

And seemingly sick workers really irk me. I have a BIG TIME PET PEEVE
people licking their finger and then flicking a plastic bag open and touching my food.
(whether they appear sick or not) it GROSSES ME OUT

If some how I get caught at a register ok this is bold but I don't care if its politically correct or not
I will ask if they have a cold or an allergy.
I totally freaked out at a woman last year at a craft store -- shes coughing a storm and was licking before
opening bags and I was buying a bunch of stuff on sale :(
So I asked she PROUDLY ANNOUNCED SHE HAD ****BRONKTIUS ***
THATS REALLY CONTAGIOUS

I told her bluntly don't be licking fingers and opening bags and touching my stuff
she was a horrid person.

I try to keep zinc losenges with me to when I'm around someone seemingly sick
I take one.

There are so many things that go on you can't see and don't know about so all you can do
is try to be careful and do the best you can.

I try to use my own pens etc at the bank as well.

Ale you have been so much better since having your tonsils out....
I do hope you can sort this out.
Having had tonsil issues I know how bad that was that was finally corrected
when I had them out at 34.

Phones can be really bad too -- do you work someplace where you have to answer a phone
others use??
That can be a really big thing.

Eeeuw yes phones! Back in the day when there were no mobiles, if my parents phone was out of action for whatever reason, I had to use the public phone at the bottom of the road - yuk!!!! Plus it smelled of wee, but that's another story entirely......

Berroca
Manuka honey and fruit juice
I prefer

Rasps
Blackberries
Strawbs
Pear
Orange
Pineapple
Apple
Cranberry

I mix these into juices with the Manuka honey, I worked outside all winter last year and I can only recall having one annoying cold.
