Is he still with other horses?

And he sounds lovely!! Unfortunately I've got one at 15'2ish, the same age, with the same sort of problems and we are having to completely reschool/retrain him.......... so I'm not really in the market for another.

Ours got much calmer when I moved his livery and put him back in with his friends. I think they like to have other horses around them. It was just a wonder that's all.

Maybe he needs more time to settle in as the dealer has told you?

I know it would mean spending more money but maybe investing in getting an RI out or an experienced friend to exercise him for you for a while might help.

He could be a very different pony once hes settled in you know.

Thanks

Just want to say thank you to all of you for trying to help. I am working with my pony but he does seem to taking a step backwards rather than forwards with me and I am beginning to wonder if I am really the right owner for him. Much as he is lovely he is quite a dominant pony and it was not my intention to have to spend months training a horse and I'm beginning to wish now that I had bought a schoolmaster type for my daughter to learn on, as this is her first pony, and she is just not getting the use or benefit from him that I had hoped. I'm waiting for the Liverpool cream to arrive then the vet can treat his ear sarcoid then I think I'll be on the lookout for a mother/daughter share schoolmaster type. Ideally I would like to take a horse on loan/trial with a view to buy and loan McKenzie out to the right person with a view to buy also, as his welfare is very important to me. Once again...thanks all x

I admire you're perserverance and you're honesty. It's hard to admit when enough is enough.
Said horse is stunning and would probably benefit from some more schooling.
If i was in a suitable position moneywise, i'd have loved to take him on.
Hope you find a nice home for him.
x

Update

McKenzie has actually settled down now that the spring grass has been eaten down and he has got used to the new field. We have been working him in the menage and riding him round the village and even though he is forward going he has been quite good. We are going to have lessons with him when we find the right trainer and hoping to take him to the pony club and some local shows later this year depending on his (and our) progress.

when we first got him he was living out in my friend's field with just 4 other ponies and then he was great when ridden out, not at all spooky, and a gem on the roads, not afraid of buses, waggons, motorbikes, people - anything. It is only since he has moved that the spooky, scary behaviour has started .

Just a thought - I saw something in a magazine about someone who wrote in about an Arab who was behaving in the same way as your boy - it turned out that it was because his field companion had moved away and he was alone in the field most of the time and this made him feel vulnerable....the person didnt realise this till she moved another horse into his field and he went back to normal! Is it posssible that the busy nature of your old yard with a reasonable sized herd is what he needed and moving to a quieter one is making him feel unprotected? I dont know if you had others in his field with him at this new place but it was just a thought :)

Hi, There are actually more horses at the new yard, and he's settled in quite well with them now. He has hyper days if something is going on, for instance when some of the horses were moved into a different field. I think he does feel vulnerable and confused sometimes and that is when he tends to nip me and dance about. But hopefully with time he will get used to the various events at the new yard. He has been great tonight, really chilled, relaxed and good to ride and no biting. Thanks for help and concern everyone.
