Wonder how many riders have bad backs?

Im not sure if its an age thing (Im 41) or a riding thing?

But since riding and getting older I have to be careful with my back it seems to go at least once a month

I only started getting a bad back approx 18 months ago after lifting a very heavy gate with cr@p hinges!

Am very careful about how I now pick thing up etc

Not back so much, but knees get bad sometimes and im only 23! :o
I see a chiropractor now and again though to click me all back into the right places! it helps loads and my position is much improved after ive been. :)

off work at the min with a bad back although it wasnt riding that did it- it's work related but riding is out of the question for a while:mad:
missed out on my lesson this week and could be doubtful about next week too

I've had a bad back since I was thrown by a horse nearly 30 years ago, I've has several other injuries to my back/pelvis since then (none caused my horses!) nowadays it takes longer to heal when I fall off, and there are times when I can't ride because there's something wrong somewhere ... but I manage :)

I've a feeling this could be a long thread. I fell off my horse three weeks ago nearly and am still feeling the results. I severely bruised my left buttock and spine and now due to overcompensating with my right side have pulled a muscle. Lets face it, we werent built to lift heavy barrows, bales of hay, straw, woodchip. Poo-picking fields, picking out hooves all puts a strain on the old back. I once put my collar bone out mucking out a woodchip bed!! And then we go an do daft things like jumping, galloping, horses shying, spinning, rearing, bucking..... all because we LOVE it!!! What are we MAD??? Another pain killer beckons xx

I have a bad back made worse by a fall, strange thing is`though it doesn't hurt when I ride at all but I'm bent over whenever I get off my chair at work!! I keep meaning to go back to the chiropractor

If I'm cold then I find I hold myself quite tense when I'm riding and that often makes my back sore, need to wrap up warm when the winter comes but then I end up getting too hot, can't win! lol

Yes my back was bad when I first got Ozzy but I think that was the shock of mucking out everyday! My best thing is my beanie bag, a warm bag of wheat that you put in the microwave it's great for sore backs and aching muscles :)

My back is horrendous. :(

When I was in the UK, I saw my wonderful Osteopath every couple of weeks. He was fab. :)

Since being here, I've had no treatment, and OMG my back is so trashed. :(

Mine's been rubbish since I was about 14, when some stupid brat I was babysitting ran up behind me and said 'piggyback' and launched herself at me, pulling me over backwards. A serious car-crash when I was 17 damaged me some more, followed by various horse-riding falls, and another car-crash. (Neither were my fault!) Oh, not forgetting when a large jump-wing fell on my back...Don't ask!)

At one point, a few years back, I saw my GP. He sent me for physio. The physio said my back was one of the worst she'd seen and was amazed I was still walking around!

When it's really bad, I wear a back-brace and eat Nurofen! It's my upper back mostly that gives me grief, but I really know I've over-done things when my lower back gives me hell too. :(

Bad-backs and horses SO seem to go together.

I haven't got a bad back but do have problems with my neck. Its three years since I initially injured it and is so much better, but some days  agony, I just wish I could take my Head Off and place it on a shelf or table for a couple of hours because its like its too heavy for my neck to support:D

Strong, very strong, painkillers are wonderful things;)

.. and now due to overcompensating with my right side have pulled a muscle.

I have the same sort of problem!

... I'm bent over whenever I get off my chair at work!!

Is that your sacro=-lliac? I 'dinged' mine last week, I've been able to walk around alright (for a change!) but when I sit down I can't get back up again! I didn't dare ride just in case I made it worse :(

*holds pen and notepad*

Name and contact details? Will he travel to Ireland?

LOL

Yeah I'm asking ...

;)

I saw a physio a couple of years ago and she had me walk up and down the corridor, she was desperately trying to keep a straight face. "Yeah, I walk like a wounded hippo, don't I?" she nearly fell over laughing ... (my [now ex] sister-in-law told me I walk like a wounded hippo  )

I'm 20 and have been suffering with painful back spasms for the past couple of months that sometimes cause me to be immobile for a couple of days.

My doctor gave me some pysio exercises to help but they don't seem to be working.

Does anyone else suffer from spasms? How do you deal with it?

Yep, know that feeling too!

I just take ibuprofen (more!) If they get really bad I take bute. DON'T try this at home! :(

I have a very painful back at the moment - fractured L1 vertebra when I fell off! Still in agony and that was 3.5 weeks ago. I am hoping things heal up soon :o

2.5 years ago I fractured L2 - off riding and work for about 5 months. But now I am riding again and only have the very odd twinge. I am 53 and am jumping again and am entering my very first ODE next year.

I didnt get physiotherapy for quite a long time but when I did it was great - that and pilates. Wish I had the time for them now.

Hopefully your L1 will recover as well as mine did. Thinking about you.
