Good link Mayog - yes, that seems to be made of the right foam.
If you pad up with normal foam it won't do anything to help. If you pad up with the NASA-type foam it will, because it dissipates the pressure over a larger area. That it is why it is used in space shuttle seats, hospital beds and those "memory foam" beds.
Pressure over the back and under the stirrup D's is only one sort of pressure that comes from a pad like this. Another potential problem area would be on the wither, because it is flat. Then also under the rider's seatbones. But I'll take your word for it about the endurance riders Shadowlark, unless you can point to some testimonials or discussion on endurance websites?
I'd still like to know if they have done any formal pressure testing with it.
Well, apparently there is because people seem to be doing OK with them! But the lady I spoke to who had one hadn't really done many miles in it. She did say she was using a thick pad underneath it, but I can't see that would help much as compared to the weight of a rider.
There are ways of testing weight distribution with new saddles etc, normally with a Port Lewis pad. I think you have to go to a man in Wales who does it. That was our plan when my friend and I designed a saddle. Unfortunately the saddlers we approached were too short sighted to help us... with our saddle that had no rigid parts, had a conventional "English" appearance, and used memory foam to help absorb the impact of the rider... sound familiar??
2 people rode them over port lewis's .. and I will be darned if I can find the topic thread off the list.. still looking. Course type in bareback and 5gagillion hits come up from it.
Mayo did I find those when we were talking about it? Endurance.net has changed their search function.. so I can't search the archives of Ridecamp anymore..
