we want to give star a bath (shes really skanky:p)
but she is scared of the hose.

we tried to desensitise her too it, by holding it near her then moving till its right next to her, she id fine, but then when you touch her she freaks.:o

i think she will eventually get used to it but because she is settling in still at the moment i dont want to scare her, i would like her to stay as calm as possible :o

so do i just fill up loads of buckets of water?

do you put the shampoo in the water then put it all on, then wrinse(like you would a car?)

do you use a sponge to clean off the soap or do you pour buckets on them?:o

sorry for the silly questions

If she doesnt mind you washing her with buckets of water then I would do the following

Get her body all wet first

Then work the shampoo into her coat and get right into her main and tail.

Then pour over the buckets of water to rinse of the shampoo, making sure you get it all out.

I found this the easiest way to give them a bath if they dont like the hose.

Hope it helps and good luck with bathing her. :D

I sponge the horse with water all over first, then lather in shampoo (I use one of those bath puff things - Daffy loves it!). The trick then is to use a sweat scraper and get rid of the excess shampoo.

Then sponge off with clean water starting from the top. You'll probably have to do that a couple of times as the sponge tends to get soapy. Sometimes I pour a bucket of water on, but that tends to get me soaked too. :p

Yeah just use buckets.

But I'd start trying to get her used to the hose. Don't tie her up, either hold the leadrope/have someone else hold it, or leave it hanging over her neck and just start hosing her feet/the bottom of her legs every day. Just do it for a couple of minutes at first, she'll get used to it :)

so much easier with a hose!

i tried so much at my old yard.
just her legs when they were muddy, or to hose her off when she was sweaty.
i dont think she had ever seen one before :o
will start to try again soon. :)

ditto all above but also - maybe use a shampoo/rinse that does not matter if you leave some of it in just in case - some of the red rum ones are a soothing rinse with tea tree etc that you do not rinse off :)

buckets & a jug :)
my cousins horse is petrified of hoses
and shes 14
she was sprayed in the face with one as a baby
its just pointless battling with her
she wins everytime
shes touching 18hh and built like a tank, shes broke chifneys birdles etc
so we just bucket her now & she stands like a rock
x

Just a thought, but has anyone tried using those pump things you use to spray fences/weedkillers/fertiliser?

You used to be able to get them where you increase the pressure and then spray. They didn't need a hose or electric.

hmm, would be good, but my horse is also scared of sprays :(

i dont think her old owners introduced her to anything like that, and they definately didnt give her the handling she needed as a youngster. its taking ages trying to get her used to things:rolleyes:
