Recommendations please?

Dan has such a long but fine yak coat, even with linseed in his dinner it matts and clumps as he sweats a lot charging around with Hank, and its truly disgusting by this time of year. I did a little bib clip a few months ago to try and prevent the worst of it but his whole body is pretty gross. Really he wants a bath, but he hates it at the best of times and it’s too cold and he’s getting grumpy about grooming now as it pulls. Hank on the same everything is soft and fluffy. So just thinking some kind of conditioner might help until he sheds 🤞

If hes that knotted I'd probably start off with just oiling him for a few days and brushing. As its the cheapest thing to apply in quantity. They swap to mane and tail conditioner.

I use some of my human hair oil on the dog. His coat was full of knots so a quick oil before I brushed him. The brush glides through much nicer.

I did spritz him with mane and tail last night and it helped massively, but he was also all sweaty from the days antics with Hank so I couldn’t really do the worst matted bits - his chest and undercarriage.

Will oil not just add mess to the matts? I have some, will it go through a spray bottle?

Honestly I'd just clip and rug accordingly, though if it's that matted you might need some sedation and coarse or even sheep shearing blades. I suspect anything you add to his coat is goinng to make it worse in the long run.

I won’t fully clip him, I’m traumatised from the time I fully clipped Hank and then couldn’t keep him warm even with multiple rugs. I will bib clip Dan again which is where the matts are but his whole coat is poor. It’s been like this every winter since I got him.

Bit late to this but Faran gets sprayed 2/3 times a week with dream coat through winter. Stops the mud sticking as much, gives him a nice shine and it smells nice 😃

Not too late, I haven’t brought anything yet, I’m off to the national equine show this weekend for a bit of retail therapy so hoping to pick something up there.

I’ve come back to answer myself so when I look again next year it’s here 🤣 Dans coat does this right before shedding, 1 good dose of mane and tail was enough to fluff it up again until it started coming out and he’s back to being soft and fluffy.
