Thinking of investing in a new turnout rug for my horse and pony and haven't done for a few years. Wondered if there's any new technology out there that makes rugs really waterproof and breathable.

The pony is 12.2 and from previous experience there's a limited choice for him.
The horse is 16.1 with fairly broad chest and can be difficult to get the right fit.

Want to hear about your experiences with rugs - lightweight, medium, heavy or one where you can add underblanket when cold.

I wont buy anything but Weatherbeeta Freestyle, or Contour in the case of his stable rugs. Those are the best fit for him, and I've never had any trouble with them.

the best light weight i ever bought and has now been going for 4 years - which i may add is a miracle for my ned as he takes great pleasure in shredding them, is my Amigo - i have only just w/proofed it this year and :)weve had some cr@p weather over the past 3 years and this rug lives on victoriously - doesnt slip either which is unusual on jasp.

indoor he wears a light weight fleece - a cheap saxon one - thats a hammering and is still going strong:)

i have a few different weatherbeeta turn out rugs, my heavyweight (orican) is amazing! my horse has very big shoulders and this rug fits. i am impressed with the surcingles aswell they are all elasticated so not restrictive.

i get them off a website that does all sizes from 4"6 to 7"3 and the are good prices. it equestrianclearance.com

not sure if i can list websites if not sorry just new

Holly has had a lightweight (no filling) weatherbeeta landa light (starts at 4'6") and its still going strong after 3 yrs! She only ever has it on when we have heavy rain for days on end, but it has never leaked or got soaked right through.
It fits in the washing machine lovely and still stays waterproof after a wash.
I used it on my foal who was v narrow at the front, but it didnt slip or rub at all.
I have used a basic shires rug too. I think the belly straps are nice and secure but find them a bit to long for a small pony.

Another for the Orican... I find it a great fit on Kai.. He has really pushed the rug to its limits this year It looks TRASHED !... I hosed it of and it came up lovely! They are a serious H/W rug.. I dont think I'd use it on a unclipped horse.
Keeps a clipped horse really snug and dry.. :D

I also have a m/W Checktech ... This has rubbed him over the bad wet weather period. It seems to Cling to him when very wet..I have had to get his bossy Bib out so I'm not impressed. Luckily the rubs are just his hair and are not sensitive yet. It seemed to happen over a short space of time

I'm looking for another good M/W now:mad:

After bad experiences with cheaper brands of rug I now only buy from the Horseware range.

This winter I bought a Rambo duo for my new youngster which was just under £200

Liners are only about £30 though so with just one rug and a few liners you can get lots of different levels of warmth to choose from and the liners clip into the main rug and stay in place very well. They say on the label that each seperate part of the rug is light enough to fit in your normal washing machine at home but I haven't had to wash it yet.

I also like the cheaper Rhino rugs and if you hunt about on the internet you can get the range of weights for about £70 to £90.

Ive never looked into the Horseware Range, The Liners sound a great setup. Might look into that for next year!

My horse is 17.2 and a chunky ID type - big shoulders, very deep chested. I have a variety of Weatherbeeta rugs, none of which fit particularly well. The 7'3" Landa is a lovely length, but a bit "gapey" at the front, so all the rain pours down his neck. It's not very deep on him either, so gives an attractive "mini-skirt" effect! The smaller sizes either rub at the shoulders or leave his bum hanging out - or both! - and yep, all miniskirts! I recently just bought an Orican combo on recommendation, after having sworn not to buy W/B's for him. Again it's a good length - almost a bit too long, but doesn't have enought depth for him and is too narrow through the shoulders. They are nice enough rugs and reasonably priced, but if you have a broad shouldered or very deep chested horse, perhaps you could see if anyone on your yard could let you try one out for size, as in my experience, they just don't fit.

Similar problem with the Amigo l/w - nice enough rug, but the biggest size they do is 7'0" (we can often just get away with!), and it came a bit small - not too bad length-wise, but not nearly deep enough and too narrow through the shoulders. I also found I had to let the surcingles out as far as they could go, and only JUST had enough room to fasten them!

I really like Premier rugs (http://www.premierequineinternational.com/index.html) and Fals (the older style ones, simply don't have the cash for the posher ones!), as I know they will fit bigger horses. This year my horse has spent most of the time in his Premier l/w extra - bargain at £50! It fits him really well, and has reflective strips everywhere so I can track him down in the field at night. I think the Fals are possibly a little more hard wearing, but they are also a little more pricey! Popping away some pennies for a new t/o at the moment - going for this: http://www.equestrianclearance.com/product/fal_pro_taska_turnout_rug_3_styles/clearance/1/index.html

He'll just have to do with the tatty old ones for the rest of the winter though!

you cant beat fal pro rugs for turnout, just superb.
2nd best id say weatherbeeta. I find weatherbeeta are fab for turnout but not so good on stable rugs and masta are crap for turnout rugs but fab for stable rugs! :D

Weirdly, although I don't like Weatherbeeta t/o rugs, I do have one of their stable rugs, and I really like it!! No experience of Masta's though.

Have to agree with you on the Fals - bit pricey, but you get what you pay for. My horse has a lovely Fal stable rug, we just need a t/o now... :)

Mine used to have a Rhinegold Lightweight (cheap off ebay) within 2 months he ripped it from wither to tail!! Also they are very deep, it was round his knees!
Now he's in a masta (checktech) , it fits him a treat, its waterproof and its purple!! (daughters choice also got 1 in hot pink!!):D

I had a VERY broad shouldered mare and weatherbeeta rugs did NOT fit her at all. As they are fitted around the shoulders I needed to put a chest expander in to line the fitted bits up with the edge of her shoulders.

Masta rugs were great on her, especially the chec tech ones. I had the high neck one on her, also the outside is alot thicker than the weatherbeeta rugs, looks and feels alot tougher and was very waterproof, although I do get all my rugs washed the re-proofed regularly.

I like Amigo and horsewear. The Amigo got ripped - we have a few bramble bushes in the field! My spare rug is GFS lovely rug but very deep comes down to his knees so looks like he is wearing a skirt and have just invested in a Rhino. Pony lives out 24/7 so needs good rugs and spares!

Personally give me a Weatherbeeta any day. We have them for our ponies and love them. Our yard is fairly exposed and their field had no natural shelter and the freestyle tail flap is just invaluable for keeping them comfortable. I absolutely hate Mastas having tried them on now three occasions with different horses as emergency buys and have never yet had one that does not slip, and that includes turn out and stable, although I know other people on the yard who swear by them! I also like Rambo and Amigos but I find they dont have the depth I like for turn out rugs.
