What kind of bit would everyone recommend using for a Shetland who has never been bitted before? She will only be doing some long reining at the moment.

And also is there any way to measure a pony for a bit, that has never had a bit before?:) I suspect she'll be either a 4" or a 4.5"

Our big guys, 41" and about 39" take a 4.5 inch bit, the 36-37 inch guys tend towards the 4"

We just use a French link or jointed eggbutt. Not many like a straight bar, they all seem to whinge about them.

Only ever started ponies in plain SS. I don't even like the colt nylon in hand bits, they can get very rough if they get chewed.

I'd go for a myler MB04 low ported comfort snaffle, hanging cheek
They are great for small ponies, who have fleshy mouths, but not much room, The smallest I have in stock at the moent is a 4 1/2'', But they are available as small as 3 1/2''!
see:http://www.scallywagsequinesupplies...+04,+Low+Port+Comfort+Snaffle,+Hanging+Cheek/

We back all out youngsters, in the MB04 low port comfort snaffle, and I havnt had a horse yet, dislike it

£52.00............That's more than most Shetlands are worth! ;)

i'll try a normal eggbutt french link and see how she goes in that first before splashing out on a myler:p:D lol:) thanks for the suggestion though:) i really liked the myler bits, was thinking of buying one for Shian, but we're now bitless:)
