I'm hoping to enter a local WH class with my mare and want to make sure we're turned out properly.

I have a nice brown leather straight cut saddle, will get a white girth (she is a grey), suitable numnah and have a nice hunter bridle. But what do I do about boots for my horse??

I ride her out in brushing boots on all 4 when hacking, schooling and jumping at home but what is the etiquette for the jumping section of a WH Classes?? I know any boots have to be taken during the show section.

Plain coloured boots (black/brown or possibly white on a grey) can be worn for the jumping section, but have to be taken off for the showing section. If it's unaffiliated it's unlikely they'll mind what kind of boots you use, but if it's affliated, check the society rules as some only allow certain type of boots.

Thanks you've been a great help.

I think I may get a white girth anyway or nice brown leather one as the one I have is currently black anyway so doesn't match anything!

Numnah - a nice discreet neat cut one to saddle is best but is it best to go wit brown like the saddle or white like the horse??

As for boots think I may get some white ones as they will be more discreet or possibly brown leather type ones as they will match the rest of the tack.

Thanks though as usual you have both been a fountain of knowledge :)

numnah to match saddle -white is never correct for showing.

if horse is proper snowy white (and very clean!), then a white girth does look smart - if horse is dapply or silvery, it can make the horse look grubby in comparison. petal isn't snowy enough to carry off a white girth. also if the horse is long backed, a leather girth will 'cut it in half' which improves the picture - a short backed horse is better in a white girth to make the body look that bit longer.

colour wise you'll be Ok with white - depends how long a back she has. if she is compact then white would work, if she is longer then leather or brown. a leather girth is always correct no matter what.

I'd keep everything matching & 'rustic' looking - shiny new tack is never popular in hunter classes. The idea is how they look on the hunting field. I'd go with a brown numnah (we use sheepskin ones) & girth. You want a double bridle (or pelem with 2 reins) & a good wide noseband. Generally whatever boots are OK for the jumping phase just remeber to take them off straight after you've been round.

Thanks Hardy, this will be my first show so think I will stick with my plain hunter snaffle bridle until I decide whether I enjoy it etc before going out and buying a new double bridle.

You look great in that picture though :) Stunning horse

whichever make fits you best! but both are fine. i am not keen on the very high crowned ones like the Co in the picture, they can make you look liek a policeman! and if you have a small head they look daft.
