Hi

Does anyone know (i.e been told by a vet) how strong bute (in particular Danilon) is..?

Is it the same sort of thing as a human taking a nurofen or is it stronger than that?

Please only answer if you actually know for definate. It's quite important

Thanks xxx

depends on dosage, if you give half a sachet every day (or one every other day) then its a ticking over dose any more and its a more short term treatment (or will be lowered over time)

I can tell you that Danilon is preferable to Equipalazone. It's gentler on the gut and has less long term effects. Some vets say that Danilon is not quite as strong as Equipalazone but I always use Danilon and have never found it less effective. As for the human equivalent, I wouldn't like to say.

Thanks guys, my mare has really hurt (potentially broken) her stifle. Waiting for xrays to come back from newmarket and sadly it probs wont be good news :(

But she is improving slightly everyday (she did it a week ago and has been on box rest ever since) is bearing alot more weight on the bad leg today and is still bright, happy, eating, laying down and getting up.

She's currently on 4 a day, 2 in morning and 2 in eve which i accept is a high dose. Has been since she did the injury, but has been making a small improvement every day.

What i am trying to work out is if she has perhaps broken her stifle, would she still be happy, eating and in particular laying down and getting up. I'm not deluded just trying to make sense of it.

Basically, I am trying to decide if 4 danilon a day would be strong enough to make her so comfortable.... don't get me wrong, she's still lame, but her lameness is still in line with soft tissue damage which would also make sense....

Thanks xx

So sorry to hear about your mare. Danilon will make her comfortable enough and as she's on such a high dose I would definately stick with that rather than Equipalazone. Fingers crossed for her xxx

Sorry, misread your post! It's difficult to tell whether it's the Danilon or the fact that she hasn't broken her stifle as being the reason she's so happy and comfortable - I don't think you can use it as any kind of indicator as it would depend on her pain threshold anyway. At least she's not in pain which is something to be grateful for, and just keep your fingers crossed for good news. Let us know what happens ;)

p.s sorry just read this.... i can't get my hopes up so i am trying to think the worst but it is so dificult when she seems to be getting better.

Basically, the vets are not sure if it is broken or not. They have ascertained that both her stifles are deformed and the xray does not appear to show that it is def a break. It could be that it has always looked like that... but they are not sure hence the referal to newmarket.

When i asked the vet yesterday whether it was possible that this was just what her stifles looked like (and they have never caused her probs before) and that perhaps she just had soft tissue damage she said it was a possibility.... but i dont think she's overly hopeful tbh.

I just can't see how she could be improving and be so happy if it was broken... but perhaps I don't want to have to face up to reality. I spent monday night thinking she was going to be put down on tuesday, then spoke to the vet who recommended the referal. So has been a complete rollercoaster of emotions since monday.

I'd never keep her going if it was cruel but can't help think that because she has weird joints anyway they have kind of given up on her.

Thanks for reading xxxx

Bute is fantastic as a short term pain relief, it really helped my boy when he broke his hock a couple of years ago. But, you have to be careful not to give them too much (he was on 2 sachets a day i think) as they will do too much if they're not a little bit uncomfortable!!

Re. the broken stifle, dont get too down!! My Charlie broke his in a cross country fall, and it was a long and expensive treatment but within a year he was being ridden and within 2 years he was back competing! I hope she hasn't broken it as it was very painful for Charlie when he broke his!! But its not all doom and gloom :)

P.S. Is she at a specialist equine vets? If not, a referal to one would be good where they have the facilities to do surgery if neccessary!!
