cats - which would you choose??

ahh yes, the only fault of Oscar, he got "quite" annoyed when been brushed:rolleyes: but then again i think he got that from his dad...

.........and he got a little embarrassed when picked up outside....:p bless:D

thanks everyone for the replies!!:D

you should've seen me chasing our old MC boy (who we lost this year to cancer) down the road to pick him, then once caught he would shout all the way back to the house to let everyone know what his mommy had done lol

im sure it looked hilarious, he was one of the biggest MC boys to ever be bred in this country, off two pure american imports so HUGE, and weighing in at 28lbs and quite grumpy looking...bet people thought i was mad. :)

My Maine Coon is a real people cat, loves everyone and follows me everywhere and LOVES to be brushed, lays on her back with her legs spread eagled wating to be brushed (the hussy)!:D

I've never had cat insurance as I have never had problems with any of my cats (touch wood) So far I've saved a fortune over the past 21 years and a fair few cats! I worked out over their life time with several cats its better odds to chance it and risk a large vets bill. So far it's paid off. :)

Norwegian forest cats and somalis also as suggested were on my wis list too but I have no 1st hand experience of them and can only have two kitties when the time comes so it will be maine coon and bengal (or Birman).

cat insurance works out too expensive if you have more than 3 pedigree cats :( and due to this we have a vets bill of over £1000 atm for our Maine Coon boys cancer treatment :( he was only 12 so very unexpected, but the big breeds have shorter life spans now sadly. Our old MC girl was with us for 16 years.

forest cats are much like the maine coons, maybe a little more grumpier, and somali's are fantastic, they love people, wont leave you alone and are very hyperactive, i'd be lost without somali's! :)

im off to the vets with out 18 year old british shorthair and the somali girl later, arghhh.

See what you mean with this - my kitten was an 'accident' and we got her for free - wouldn't swap her for the most well-bred cat in the world (even though in the last day she's smashed baubles, shredded wrapping paper, pulled lights of the christmas tree, run away with the strips of ribbon, climbed up the tree and nearly knocked it over, and is attacking the name tags on presents as we speak :p;):D) never really saw the appeal of a pedigree when she would've gone possibly to a rescue centre - she's just as good as any other cat out there even if she'll never be a show cat :). She's pretty, affectionate, clever, funny, great company, well house trained, energetic - everything that makes a fab cat - so who cares what breed she is :p? IMO unless you're buying for breeding or showing having a pedigree isn't really important :).

(and my kitten does the same thing with dressing gowns - in the end i just gave up my 'super-soft' expensive one to her and it's now lining her bed  - yes i'm afraid we do spoil her :D)
QUOTE]

She is sooooo gorgeous, is she tabby and white or tort and white? Laughing madly at her behaviour over the last few days, she should meet Tigs, I just found him attempting to rip the wrapping off my friend's present under the tree. Agree with the spoiling, how can you not when they give you that 'but it's so cosy here and I'm so cute and cuddly and even though I will destroy your nice new jumper by sticking my claws in it later, you love me soooo much' look ;) :D

Had no idea people actually picked breeds of cat unless they were showing! As far as we were concerned, the cat will become what you raise him/her as. We rang the local CPL and they had three litters of unexpected kittens needing homes, nearly all were black and white and as Whilkie our old cat was BW we wanted something different, so along came Tigger!

i think its nice to know the breed characteristics, as said before our old moggie, who we lost this year, was not friendly, and wasn't a people person. whereas we brought Oscar up the same way, and he turned out totally different. Maine Coons definitely have a certain "something" about them that, no offence, i cant see in any other moggies i have met.

Oscar had had a very loud purr, i could hear him from the other side of the room, he always meowed to let you know what he wanted, like if he wanted to go out, if he was hungry, if he wanted to come in etc. the list is endless. he also had a special meow, kinda like a chirp, his little mouth went at a mile a minute and this little "chirp" was all that came out of it(so cute :p) he acted like a dog, followed you around the stable, played with anything that caught his eye. whenever he found you there (hadn't followed you from the house) he would meow, as if to say "im hear!! lets play!! and when he had been naughty (grabbed your foot and wouldn't let go:rolleyes:) he would jump back, eyes huge, ears flat to the side, stare at you as if to say "come on then, get me if you can" the charged of upsairs at full speed, and hid somewhere, and the only way you could find him is to be silent, and wait for a bell noise. or you could get his cow (this sounds weird, but its "his" toy, no one elses, he was brought up with it from a kitten, and then he would snuggle up to it, then he would play with it, wrap his front legs around it, bite it, then kick with his back legs and boy was he aggressive with it!!:p you could get it by the tail and spin it round and he would hang onto it, so FUNNY!! ....not that i tried *ahem*. it had a bell on and when he heard it he would come running from where ever he was to attack !!:D) he also came to call, and not just he was in the garden, you called him, and he walked up, as in he was no where to be seen, in a field somewhere and you would shout his name and you would listen, sometimes it would take a while, depending how far he was away!! you would hear a jingle, then you saw him jump over the fence and come running up to you then look at you as if to say "you called??":D

he had a big personality, would reply when you said his name or "what" (in a sweet voice) he didn't trust anyone but his family, and was VERY timid around people he didn't know.

i remember one time, lay upside down on my lap, head watching t.v (upside down, he had skill) we were watching a film, he lay there until it finished, purring away, and when it did he jumped of my lap, went on his bed, and fell asleep. he was the only animal we ever let upstairs, as he was clean and we trusted him 100% .he used to sleep on my bed, and the looks he gave me when i was laughing so hard i was crying !! (Ross Noble is way too funny) he even came to check on me a few times, i think he was genuinely worried for me:p

he has lots of other special things about him but i will stop there. i miss him so much:( (my eyes are starting to well up, and i dont cry,:( (only when i laugh)

ETA: This is her first night with us - how could you not love that :p?

lol, bless, very cute, love the colour.:)

Aww Ginny sorry if I spoke out of line. I tend to speak (or type) before I think and this makes it come out rudely, whereas it is really just ignorance

I can see from what Oscar was like why you would want another maine coon. He sounds like a lovely lovely boy, kinda like he had some dog characteristics but with the low maintenance of a cat. I'm so sorry he is still missing.

I think maybe I need to spend more time learning about cat breeds! I just would feel bad buying from a breeder when there are litteluns noone wants out there :(

I wonder if there is like a maine coon rehoming charity thing? As I am sure a lot of people would buy a cat like that cos they look pretty then realise the long fur needs more maintenance than they can deal with, or they want a quiet cat but the maine coon turns out too lively.

Aw my Maine Coon chirps constantly at me :D I went out for 6 hours last nigh (unheard of) and when I got back she was at the door yelling at me....and followed me around the entire house yelling in my ear then never left my side the whole night purring like a lion! I adore her :D

I love all cats (except sphynx- stupid americans- they should be banned its not fair to the cat) I think it depends on your personality and what you want from a cat! I would gladly have moggies again as long as I got my Maine coon too!

Somalis are sounding pretty good too now...thanks Vixie :D

A house is not a home without a cat!!!! Not in our house anyway!!!:D:D:D

yes there is a maine coon rescue, it is part of the club and if anyone is interested i could put you in touch with the lady who runs it :)

not sure how many are in need of homes atm, but theres always a few who need a new home.

you didn't speak out of line, its ok:) he was like a dog, yes, the good thing is he didn't smell like them:eek:;) also there fur i found was surprisingly easy, just there belly that really got knotty

awwww, when Oscars been waiting at the door, and hear's the car he runs of. as soon as we jump out he calmly walks back up as if to say "i new it was you all along!! i was only joking" .....*ahem*:D

Hi Ginny,

Have you registered your missing cat with www.nationalpetregister.org

I volunteer for the cats protection league working on feral colonies and the amount of strays I find it amazing but usually not micro-chipped but I do check the register and you never know may be worth a look

we used to have a gorgeous norwegian forest cat called mr scruff :) i love that they've got tufts of hair between their toes so they dont get cold in the snow :D:D
the best cats we've ever had are from rescue centres, they've got lovely personalities and sometimes you can get a pedigree as well. we went to the rescue place cos we heard they had some burmese ones in, but came back with a norwegian forest and a black and white moggy!

i would NEVER buy from a breeder, as theres too many cats with a history and a reason for you to take them in from the rescue centre. i don't think it's really fair, just vanity.

really? are forest cats meant to be grumpy? ours was an old man but the gentlest creature you could ever meet, but he used to knead you with his claws out all the time which really got to us!!! the only time he ever scratched me was when we were playing with a catnip toy and i think he was a little bit high, he went to grab the toy but caught me. when i went 'OW!' he got really upset and embarassed.:p

he was really smelly and scruffy as well, we used to say if you shaved him he'd have all tacky tattoos on him! he was abandoned by his owners and locked in a house so i think he went a bit stir crazy, and used to wag his tail when he was happy and lick his furry 'ruff' around his neck (that really weird action cats do when they lick this bit) like mad when you scratched his bum! he also had a 'favourite' tree in the garden. when you were sat in the kitchen sometimes you'd see him sprint up to it really fast, run halfway up it, start attacking it like mad then just drop off it and walk away like nothing had happened

well when you show cats likei do its a case of having to buy from breeders :p

and yes forest cats are known for being a bit on the grumpy, temperamental side.

I adore moggies, but I think it's the same as with horses - sometimes you stumble on a breed which suits you and you never go back!

My Grandmother always had siamese and I've followed on with the tradition :p.
Same as with horse breeds there's stereotype exceptions, but usually meezers are VERY loyal, playful, inquisitive, LOUD and chatty, gregarious and VERY big climbers!
Most also shed a lot less than other breeds/moggies :-D.

On the downside, you either need 2, or need to be at home a lot. They don't do well in isolation.
They also don't do well with roads! They can be let out (although I keep mine in) but road sense isn't their strong point .
Also they can become very fixated on one person and shy with strangers if not socialised really well (I've got one who leaps on people he knows for cuddles, but hides in the bath when strangers come round ).

shes not showing the cats though, is she?

i was making a point...that its not vanity, and if you do show cats you have to buy from a reg breeder as you cant show witout the papers.

some people buy pedigrees as pets, then get into showing.

ive got a rescued moggy too, who rules the pedigrees in the household, infact my mother got into showing through household pets sections. :)

Joanna Lumley was looking at the maine coons at the surpreme show last month....good taste she has ;)

I haven't read the other replies as I only just spotted this post, just wanted to say GET A BIRMAN!!! They are the most adorable breed of cat, they really are.

I've had my two five years and they are both loveable but very different.

Quentin (darker coloured one) follows me around like a dog demanding attention. He plays with everything and always has to be around people - when I watch telly he will sit on top of it so he can convince himself I'm actually watching him.

Betty (lighter one) is less demanding, but in a way friendlier - he will walk into a room purring and you can hear him from the other side of the room. When you speak to him he talks back, he has the most comical squeaky voice (hence being nicknamed betty when he is actually a boy).

They are both very affectionate to us, but on the bright side are scared of strangers so unlikely to be stolen, and they don't like to stray too far from the house. They will turn up in the garden every hour or so and miaow loudly to announce their presence, then wander off again and have never stayed out overnight.

Anyway I could ramble on all day about them, so here's a few pics.....
