I've come accross a 'Jolley's Pet Store', where I live which is much closer than where I used to go for horse feed. It sells a small selection of horse feeds, including the dodson and horrell hard feed that I use.

However the only chaff they have is 'homebrand' chaff or mollichaff. These aren't branded chaffs (like Hifi) but are dirt cheap compared to other brands. As it's only basic chaff, what are your views on cheapy feeds like that? The incredients are just 'chopped straw' and a few extra bits.

At least with brands like Dengie or Dodson and Horrell you can be fairly confident of what you are getting!!

The cheaper brands tend to have more molasses on them and smell a lot sweeter, not to mention stick to everything! :)

Actually, Mollichaff is sold in 15kg bags I think, opposed to 20kg like Dengie. So what seems to be cheaper probably isn't that much when it's compared by weight.

Hi Fi Lite is cheaper than regular Hi Fi because they have to take out all the goodness and sugars from it, which is a more expenisve process. The cheaper chaff don't do this so in relation of goodness and natural product is probably 'better' but then it depends whether you need to keep weight off a good doer etc?

Just check the ingredients and see what exactly is in there. I don't like feeding additives etc, but sometimes it is unavoidable. Just check there's no animal products in it - there's a recent thread with info about animal products and fish bones in some feeds/supplements that have snuck in...

Mollichaff had a reputation for being cheap and swimming in sugar however they do a hoofkind version or ideally high fibre alfa is molasses free and nice quality my two love it as it's minty :) like no angel said though they are smaller bags than dengue :)

While Mollichaff isn't really low sugar & starch it still isn't that bad, unless you feed huge quantities or have a very sensitive horse I wouldn't expect it to cause a problem. It's lower than most mixes or nuts & isn't the old chaff that you used to buy where you put your hand in the bag & it came out coated in a stick mess!

Caryhorse they do a fab molasses free which was until a few weeks ago lowest sugar/starch you could buy :) mine Hoover it up as it has mint to make it palatable instead :) dengue have just bought out an equivalent version in last few weeks :) find both quite hard to source still (special order) but mollichaff one well worth it... Yet to open the dengie one!

We use Mollichaff Showshine and it's amazing. We can't feed it to our laminitic or my welshie as he's very molasses and feed sensitive so we buy dengie for them, but you can really see the different in the horses that have the showshine. It's cheaper and cherry flavoured.. they seem to love it.

I feed mollichaff and my two dont seem to have a bother with it. they were previously on alpha A but it got too expensive with two so they are now on mollichaff orig and mollichaff hi fibre alphalfa mixed together and I havent had any bother.

Nikki xx :D

Mollichaff cherry or apple for my two and feed stores own brand pony nuts. They get prpper branded speedibeet though as it lasts for ever so i don't mind paying an extra couple of quid for that! :)
