ive never clipped before let alone hogged/clipped feathers, what kind of clippers do i need? is there any that rents them as i am a poor student! haha

also how do i do it? literally jus shave right down his mane?

lots of questions! heres a pic...

I have one cob all natural and one hogged and clipped....well the hogged one is at the moment part way there in that over winter she lives out unturned so has a hairy body, then I reshaved her feathers because she gets itchy and have just the other day clipped her mane off. She looks daft at the minute,
But when her summer coat comes through she will look lovely.

In all honesty I prefer the natural look, although being hogged really suits rosie! I think moet would look daft...plus she's pretty scared of clippers! Lol!

Do u know anyone with clippers that u could ask to do it for u for your first time so u can watch and Learn?

Or you could let him grow and have Marc Bolam instead of Duncan Goodhew!!

*shows her age*

Who ?

*off to google that*

I like cobs full flowing and natural - she says having clipped her cobs feathers off in Autumn. I've never hogged him though as I don't like leaving them out with no way to get rid of the flies in the summer and I won't put a fly rug on him.

I did my cob yesterday in the wind. What a mistake. Horse hair in my eyes, down my bra LOL.

Anyway yes just literally "shave" the whole main off so there is no hair sticking up at all. I take his forelock off too as I think he looks stunning like that. Don't like hairy horses myself but take his feathers off mainly because he gets quite scabby and sore and itchy with them.

What a lovely cob. I prefer mine with flowing mane and feathers though, even though they are anything but flowing in the winter mud.:giggle::giggle:

I used to have my mare (not a hairy cob) fully clipped when she was competing a lot, but got someone to do it for me. I would look on ebay for some clippers as you may find some fairly cheap ones now that it is approaching Spring. However if I ever decided to get mine clipped I would get someone to do as I am hopless with my own hair never mind my horses. :giggle::giggle:

We like ours au-natural , we did hog her once when she had problems with her mane and itching but it soon came back, I think its much down to what you are wanting to do with them, we did tradtional showing so obviously trimming was a no no.
looks good hogged though - so unless you want to do something along the tradional lines then I would keep as is, would have thought there is someone local to you who has trimmer and would sort it for you for few quid, ask around or in local tack shop they usually know someone.

I'm 50:50 when it comes to cobs... I like long mans and tails, but clipped everywhere else and feathers off as well. I think it neatens up the legs and makes them look a little finer than they really are. Likewise a longer mane can disguise a larger neck very well. I am completely biased though, I like finer breeds so I guess what I just descirbed is turning a cob into a finer horse.

A couple at the yard do complete hogging and clipping. One made him look worse and the other made him look a lot better. The one that looks very smart indeed is very much like your cob - coloured and has smaller legs than expected under all the feather!

There will be someone local to you most likely that you can ask to come out and clip for you. They charge, obviously, but last time I had a full clip I paid £40. I can't imagine it'd be any more than £40-50 including hogging and feathers as well?

I don't do very neat and tidy. I like a horse to look more like nature intended but with a bit of a tidy up.

In summer I keep the mane on my sec d to just below eye length but thin it like mad as it's very bushy. The tail I keep as long as posible with a switched end but again thinning like mad. In winter the tail length is reduced to just below the hock and the mane left well alone to thicken up and grow down.

My little 10.2hh heinz 52 I basically just keep mane and tail to an even length but allow to go as long as they get to. No need to thin.

I think the mane and tail are there to do a job. I also like them to show off movement. My goodness my heart does melt when my sec d is showing off in the field.
