Following my thread of worry

Poor Rambo colicked yesterday night/morning. He had his internals examined and his stomach pumped out. Verdict, no impaction, but clearly belly aching and very elevated heart rate :(.

I've been seeing to him every two hours all night. Vet said to give him handfuls of hay at a time. Rambo still isn't settled. He's box walking and occasionally still pawing the ground, although at least he's no longer trying to go down all the time. He;s had a few slops of VERY wet bran mash because he hasn't been drinking enough.

Not sure what else to do :(. He's just so distressed at the moment. Mayve some Sedalin to take the edge off the change? Or just watch and hope for the best. Horse :( Who'd want em?!

Right, back off to the stables for the day.

I haven't even managed to get in touch with my supervisor yet. He'll probably be phoning the police to report me missing soon!!

Hi soot, I can only sympathise with you. My horse went through a period last year of colicking every few weeks, believed to be down to being stuick in on box rest. It's an exhausting experience for you & him! I found I did very little sleeping & a lot of shivering outside in the dark!
He was suffering from spasmodic colic, which left him very bloated & rumbly!
Once it was checked that there were no impactions & that he was passing poos, he was given a shot of buscopan & a painkiller. This helped almost immediately.
He was then fed very small amounts of hay after about 8hrs. I always made sure hay was really wet, firstly helps it pass through & also will help with any dehydration.
I'm not sure sedolin would be a good plan as it would be difficult to see if the pain was coming back, & also if hes not doing much moving around his metabolism would slow right down, which wouldn't help any tummy probs either.
I hope he settles down soon x

Hi soot know exactly what your going through. My horse coliced in nov needed surgery and is having regular bouts of gassy colic as he is on box rest. My advice is if you think he is still in discomfort ring the vet. I wouldnt use sedalin as you dont want to mask any symptoms. If he is passing urine and poo and is interested in his food then your doing ok if not it might be worth the vet coming back out to give an antispamodic and painrelief. Im back and for to stables today as mine had colic over night! Tough going and very expensive isnt it!!:p You know your horse best so just keep monitoring and go from there good luck!:)

Back for a lunch break!

Man, this is sooooo tiring. I feel like I'm in a twilight zone -- only realised an hour ago that I forgot to tell the office I wasn't coming in yesterday, today ... and likely tomorrow. I wouldn't be productive anyway!!

He's still not passing much poo although there were a few little bits of dropping very early this morning (nothing since). He started box walking when the other horses were turned out and started going completely nuts, so the vet said to Sedalin him ... 2 little ml knocked him out right away. He must think it really sucked having to do the trip from France just to be anal probed, isolated and sedated in his new home. I'm at such a loss for what else to do! The floods and terrible weather aren't helping in the least as poor Rambo nearly blew away during the 10 minutes he had in the paddock. And then was drenched to the bone because the wind was bring the rain UNDER the rug. So in he came, dried off, nice and snug now and sedated *SIGH* ...

At 5.30 this morning WE HAD A POO!!!

Going to try and get him some turnout today despite the pouring rain (his rugs haven't arrived yet but I'll have to ferret around the yard and help myself to whatever fits hehehe) ... Yesterday he started stressing when the two girls next door went out (only three stables), so I think it might be better for him to follow them out today ..... **FINGERS CROSSED** ... I am still absolutely terrified he's going to start pawing the ground again any time now, but can't really do anything but wait. Managed to sleep from 11 pm tp 5 am today BLISS!
