Completely pointless but I'm curious... Which is more popular...riding or golf?

Nutty Saddlers !
Well, Paul is watching some random TV programme about golf lessons (yawn) and I said

'Why isn't there a more interesting horse-riding programme on?'

and he said

'Because golf is more popular than riding - more people play golf that ride horses!' (He does both!)

Does anyone know if he's correct? How many riders are there in the world and how many golfers?? I don't even know where to begin trying to find that information! Anyone any good at 'statistics' and 'facts and figures'??

Just curious!:D

Hate, hate, hate to say it........but he`s prob right:D Know where you`re coming from.......trust me you are not alone:)

Golf is so pointless!!! Weirdly, a mad keen golfer at school likes to keep up with horsey things: he asked me today if you can put lights on the horse for when you ride in the dark (uh, I don't, mate!) and I explained about the flashing lights and whole hi-viz things you can get to go on and round tack/legs etc for riders and horses.

I play golf!

Well... I say that... I made a little course round my flat and stole one of OH's putters... the sort of thing you're allowed to do at twenty five cos your parents can't stop you, mwah ha ha!

Spooky - I've had the same conversation with my OH too!! Sky sports ALWAYS has some golf on - if not football!

Very occasionally do we get any eventing or showjumping - although we do get Olympia at xmas!

Can't complain about his golf really - he spends as much time on the golf course as I do down the yard - so it works for us.

I think there are more golf courses, golf programmes and games televised because golf is more accessible to everyone than riding - you can play golf cheaper than have regular riding lessons!

Only good thing about golf is that we can ride across the local golf course which means there are no cars at all there.

Oh and crazy golf. And the funky socks!

Other than that I really don't get how it can be exciting

I don't understand it which probably explains why I'm not so fond, but having taken my god-daughters to crazy golf in the summer, I have to see the entertainment value, especially when the elder one took 8 shots to get her alleged 'hole in one'! Was it Winston Churchill the one who said 'Golf is a good walk in the country spoiled'?:D I often think the bridelways in our local woods should be extended over that nice flat golf course (leader on a hack one day nearly came off when some inconsiderate swine teed off right by the horse!). A friend of mine used to make a habit of waiting for the golfers to place the ball on the tee, start to swing, then gallop flat out over the course!

seeing as they have made so many nice gallopy fields into golf courses and they have stuck golfcourses where our bridle paths go so we have a horrible bit of hard ground and they get all the nice soft grass then i would say yes, it is more popular.

a waste of good land if you ask me!

oh, and did i mention i work at a golf course.lol :o

well, at least it's cheaper to play golf than to keep horses.
A couple of friends of mine almost ditched in the horses for a set of golf clubs and a gold membership, but they came to their senses in the end :D

my mum and dad both play golf with two coarses each and all the new equipment they buy each year mum and i worked out that iam about the same for kali as my dad for all his golfing stuff mum took about 6 months of my bills to what she could find of my dads and i was £100 cheeper (go me) had bet with dad what ever the diffrences was the person who lost had to match so i got £100 (go me again)

Do you reckon? not where we are it isn't  We have Royal Birkdale where the British Open is played every 8 years or so (this year in fact) near us and the membership fees of that club is   and you have to be invited by two members and then be approved by the committee and I'd hazard a guess that it's the same at the other places the Open is staged in the UK :( There are other clubs locally which are cheaper obviously but like the horsey world there's the "snob" value involved

I never had any interest in golf until I played Tiger Woods game on the X Box and now I love it (watching I must admit, I can't play to save my life :( wish I could then I wouldn't have any problems about paying for the horse :D)

I do think golf is more "commercial" (not necessarily more popular) and therefore more promoted particularly for men unfortunately and as a result is televised more than equestrian sports, especially these days :( By that I mean it's more "business" orientated for company executives to use for all their PR sort of stuff. It's far safer to invite a group of potential clients to a leisurely stroll round a golf course than have them introduced to a living, breathing creature which has a mind of it's own and say get on and see what happens. It would be very interesting and I suspect highly amusing but hardly conducive to a successful business deal :D

We have both in my house! My OH is the manager of a 27-hole golf course. On the rare occasion he drives me round it in a buggy, proudly showing me his well-tended turf, I just look longingly at the fairways and think what wonderful gallops they'd make! :p

There's a golf course here wich runs at a huge loss, however it also gets massive, MASSIVE grants from the council to keep it ope so they and their little friends can go play with their balls.........and sticks!
Football too is subsidised up to the eyeballs, there are no less than about 24 football pitches all susidised and mowed and fertilised and rolled and....whatever else it is you do to a football pitch. If the horse fraternity want a safe enclosed riding field or manege, they are given a scrap of land opposite the supermarket on a roundabout on a main road!

Pub golf is good, apparently.

I don't mind a spot of crazy golf if there's really nothing else (I get frustrated at the windmill though :p)

The only good thing about *actual* golf is the golf buggys. So much fun to drive!

Only good thing about golf is snazzy socks and polo shirts. Both of which I wear for riding in (golfing stuff is a bit cheaper where I shop than equestrian wear)

Must post the conversation I just had with my work mate in relation to this. We are making horses corporate!

We work for an estate agents, so times are a little tough at the mo  so we decided on a new angle - agents who ride horses instead of drive cars!

We will keep the pones in the outbuilding at the back of our office that noone uses, have chaps, jods and jackets made in the company colours, and ride to all our viewings! As we have no grass here at the end of every day I will ride one horse and lead the other to my boss's house so they can munch on his lawn as he seems to need every Friday off to mow it  Plus, we could sell the manure as a side business, and offer pony rides to kids when we are not busy on Saturdays.

Talk about a recession beating idea!!! :D :D

'Fraid it's true - golf is more popular - it bores me to tears, but my OH plays, and my daughter's in-laws, and every other person I've ever met! It's popularity is worldwide, and although I don't 'get it' either, if people are happy to participate, good luck to 'em. At least they are not blowing people up and causing mayhem!

Sport, of whatever kind will always obsess people, and frankly, we all need it, don't we?
