The horse I ride has slightly laboured breathing at rest.
It isn't terrible but it is noticeable and I am aware of it when I ride insofar as I can feel the breathing.
We don't do any hard work but I am worried as regards whether I should be riding.
In that case talk to the owner and say that you're worried and wonder if a vet has seen him, no-one on here can tell you whether or not he's safe for the work you want to do.
Agree. Talk to the owner. If the owner hasn't had or won't have the vet out and it makes you uncomfortable then finding another ride would be what I'd do. We arent there. Don't know the horse or it's history. Not fair to the horse. That said we had a horse with heaves. Under a vet's care. On meds. Had guidelines about riding and what to watch for. She was lightly ridden.
Agree with what others have said. Talk with owner. If it morally doesn't sit right with you then find a new horse to ride.
You don't give horse age. It could be old and very unfit. But a horse with breathing issues even just stood in a field could indicate a concern. The owner should consult with there vet.
I agree. It’s best to talk with the owner first, especially if the horse seems uncomfortable or has breathing issues. A vet check sounds like a good idea.
