Have a bit of a problem at the moment.

I bought my horse from the Riding Centre where I currently help oout. My horse had been out of work for 6 months due to illness and been isolated from other horses by being put in a barn stable. The barn, is by my standards, very dark and because of its construction veyr hot in the summer.

I had been hoping to get outside to ride him in the really good weather, however the YO advised me not to do so as she felt I wasn't competent enough. I was also asked to go on a hack with a group of livery owners and the YO. So I re-arranged another appoinment, yet just as I was about to get hte tack on the horse, the YO said it would be better if I stayed at the yard and use the indoor school, primarily because she felt that I may have a problem on the roads.

Have been looking at other livery yards. There are a couple. One is family run, small and offer full or DIY. THey have a small cross country course, indoor and outdoor facilities, but no riding instructor. THey have a space and I am going up to see them tomorrow

The other yard is further away, about 25 minutes drive, has a massive indoor and outdoor school ,trekking and full livery for £275 a month. BUt htey want a full three week swab test which could make things uncomfortable at my current yard as there isnt really any way of hiding a swab test. The owner is keeping a stable aside for me and is very happy for me to take my horse there as long as he has the swabs.

The 3rd stable is 30mins away and has good turnout, full livery for £75 a week and does hold some competitions.

I am really struggling. The current yard has good facilties but is run down. I just feel that he wont ever be totally my horse.

What are your views? PM if you like

to be honest i woulnt be happy that the YO is in effect, telling you what to do with your horse.
If she didnt think you were capable then why would she have sold him to you? i presume you rode him out before you bought him and coped fine?
I like the sound of the family run yard personally, you could always find a freelance RI.

CurlyWurlyRach has said it all. Its your horse. Yes the YO can offer advise but in the end hes your horse and its up to you if you want to take her advise or not. Was it her who sold the horse to you in the first place?

Yeh, he was one of the ex-riding school horses. Great horse, just a bit concerned

id be out of there like a shot.

You have bought and paid for him, he is your horse. If you want to paint him pink and ride him then you can do it if you please.

You have to be confident and stand up for yourself. Take the swab and do it. If they say anything tell them you are looking at other livery yards.

Your horse is there for your enjoyment, dont let anyone else put pressure on you to do what they want you to do.

I would not be having her tell me when and how i could ride my horse. If you continue to stay there then you will only get made to feel worse. Id move asap :)

I dont understand why she sold him to you if she didnt think you were capable. I'd take myself AND my horse and leave. If you want to go to the yard that needs the 3 week swab test can you find somewhere temporary for him while the results come back. If you stay at your present yard she will continue to undermine you and you'll start to think your not capable when you are. Hope you can make the right decision for you and your horse, and dont let this person ruin what should be for you a happy time. OK sorry for ranting but people like this make my blood boil! Sue x

Why is she thinking that you won't be able to cope?

Whilst I like the idea of ignoring the advice I don't like I also think it best to understand the reasons why that person thinks the way they do so that I can dismiss it for the right reasons :)

Thanks for all your advice guys

This is my first horse and I know I have the basics. Grooming, mucking out, feeding I have a grasp of. I am not saying I would be able to get a horse ready for a dressage show, but I can take care of my horse and recognise illness. I only need minor support.

I was annoyed at the incident with the hack butI have been advised not to use the outdoor school in case he decides to pay a visit to the field and also use the indoor school, preferably when someone is on the yard. My problem with this is that when I go back to uni I will be coming down at 6pm to ride when few people are about so you can see that this limits my riding time.

I am hoping that the livery yard, family run is suitable.
