in the real world...
ok, I must be getting old I thought:o It really hurts to dismount in the conventional way - espec since Blue is bigger than previous horses i've had. But then , thinking back, I remember as a teenager whenever I thought no one was looking I would dismount by swinging my right leg forward over my ponies neck and sliding off:D:o I was wondering if it is so bad to do this - as I am really struggling with the conventional way:o Gads, Im only 31!

I do that! :o Have a look at my pictures thread on general, I was about to do that and my sister took a another pic so I am just swinging my legs to get off! :D

I have dismounting problems at times - I have developed a way of sliding left, swinging my right leg behind me, grabbing the right stirrup leather and then launching onto the floor, sounds a bit like Twister! - this is from an 18hh shire cross that I have been riding recently - he is also WIDE to say the least! I can't do the old pony dismount you do any more! I just can't get my leg over!:p

I will openly admit to swinging my front leg over and jumping off that way.

Especially in Winter, as I can do it more slowly than the other way, that way my toes and feet don't sting like mad when I jump down. :p

No your are not alone!!! Mind you, I am older so have more excuse:rolleyes: I always dismount the way you and Sammi describe:rolleyes: rightly or wrongly it is much less painful;)

I've seen some people dismounting back at the mounting block so that they more of less step off which is another option.

Is it you knees or feet that hurt?

ooh stingy cold feet are not good! if im stupid enough to wear my hunters to work i usually "park" up at the wall we use as a mounting block and get off that way, saves all the moaning and groaning! gees, im only 23, what am i going to be like in a few years time???!!:D:D:D:D:D

Yup, I swing leg over the front and slither down to minimise impact! I even do it at shows, in lessons etc... I started when I broke my shoulder last year - it was the only way I could get off, and it has stuck now - I dont think I can get off normally any more!

I am miles older than you lot and I still swing my leg back and control my descent using my arms so that I land softly on the ground - I am 5'10" though!

I find dismounting at a block is the easiest way, but make sure someone holds your horse for you! :o

I try to dismount conventionally as much as I can, because I feel safer doing it. However, I occasionally slip my hip when riding, which means I physically can't swing my leg back, so I need several helpers - one to hold my horse, one to help me manouver my legs, and a third to catch me as I slither off!

I will admit that I told off a friends' boyfriend for swinging his leg over the horse's neck once. He was just learning to ride (fortunately on a quiet type) and decided that he was John Wayne  Without warning, he flung himself backwards in the saddle, one foot over the horses ears, and threw himself off  Fortunately, he landed on his feet and his girlfriend was leading him so someone had hold of the horse, but I informed him, under no uncertain terms, that had he done it on many other horses, the sudden movement of his leg towards their head would have been enough for a freak-out, and he would have been in no position to stay in the saddle.

I hate how it stings and hurts when you land on the ground! I've never tried dismounting by swinging my leg over the front way though, always thought it would result in me going splat lol.

i'm 16 and i *sometimes* struggle dismounting
neither of mine would really appricate me swingong my leg over their necks lol i just grab hold of the neck and cling for dear life as i get off lol must be quite amusing to watch i should imagine

I used to fear dismounting.... see this fred from yonks ago, by yours truly...

Over time I limbered up and Cherry was only just 15hh so not a long way up!

Now I have no hoss to ride at the mo so I expect I am gradually seizing up and may get that horrible jarring in the feet again next time I get invited by my loaners to ride Chez....

I often dismount by swinging my right leg over his neck and sliding down! More often than not, by getting off the conventional way, I get a 'twisting' feeling inside, possibly something to do with my history of ovarian cysts. All I know is that it bloody hurts, and would prefer it not to!!

I might be an odd one out here but I don't have much trouble dismounted in the 'conventional way no pain upon impact with the ground HOWEVER I do have problems with my tummy!!! I keep catching myself on the way down, this week I have a nasty graze from my belly button to just under my bra line, I'm not quite sure how I do it but I don't think I would be able to dismount any differently to how I am.
Anyone else have this problem?

I always dismount by swinging my leg over the neck, and Ace is only 14.2! My leg just isn't mobile enough to go the other way...:o

I am prepared to get told off here, but how I do it is to lean forward, swing my leg over the back end and then blance for a second with my tummy on the saddle before sliding down. Yes it does mean my tummy sometimes gets a scraping and its probably no good for my mount, but as I have tight hips it makes it easier because I can control the speed with which I hit the ground. :-)

I used to find with long boots that the soles were really thin and the shock from landing in them really hurt my feet and legs

hehe i get that, but i'm one of those people who will complain for know reason anyway (in a joking type of way:p) i find i launch myself off a horse swinging my right leg as far back as possible to make sure i can get off:D but then take like 5 steps back when i land just to regain balance:o i'm not the most, well lets say, graceful person in the world:rolleyes:
