Do i need planning permission for field shelters?

It does appear that it depends on where you are in the country and who you speak to. Some people say you need, it others don't.

I had heard that if its on skids or wheels you don't need it, others have told me you do, even for wheels.

If you are in an area where you are not surrounded by grouchy neighbours and anti horse people then you might get away with putting them on the land, but I would still do it on the qt and tuck them out of sight if you can.

If your going to call the coucil for goodness sake don't tell them who you are or where you want to put them, because for sure then will then be passing on the information to other council members and should you have to apply for permission, council bods have a habit of getting wind of these things and creating before you have even submitted an application.

Oh god dont tell me that!:eek:local farmer told me not to even bother telling them as you cant see shelters from anywhere unless you come up to house and even then they arnt visable!we're surrounded by forrest fortunately and farmers dont give a rats a**e what you get up to!!:D

(My parents are still having council trouble for a new storage yard even after 2 years!!)

sounds like a very wise farmer..... seriously, dont bother.;)

we were told that if it was up to a certain size, we just needed notification not planning permission. But then they changed their minds and said we needed full permission. This was for non-mobile shelters.

Mobile shelters only work up to a certain size or the skids become an issue. Plus you really need level ground or they will warp.

ETA: I think the change was something to do with the horses meaning it was not "agricultural land" and it is classified as a different type and hence different rules.

I am surrounded by grouchi neighbours and anti hoss people - so I checked with our local council first and wrote everything they said down - afterall, I bought my house on the strength of it coming with land but no stables! I definitely knew I'd need shelters for our pair - specially with Joe being older and tb type. I wrote down the name, date and time of the planning officer who dealt with me, and I still think if I'd not done so, then my vile neighbour would have delighted in throwing it in my face and blackmailing me by threatening to ring them. As it turned out, I told him I'd gone to see the council and that there wasn't a dam thing he could do. I don't think he took my word for it tho, I'm sure he went up there screaming!

I had a heated debate with my council over this. I was told I would need permission for a shelter so I said I would get a mobile one. He told me I would still need permission. I explained that it could be moved but he was adement that even though it could be moved about it would still be in one area:mad: I then asked if people needed permission to keep caravans on their drives he ignored this but said you need permission for static caravans and the are mobile (can be towed short distances like a mobile shelter) He also went on to say that getting permission might be hard because they had to think about the fact that if they granted it then in a few years time I might apply to put a house there:rolleyes: I decided not to take the risk and never bought the land. It was next to an old castle so maybe this had something to do with it.
If I put a shelter up at the field Im at now I wont apply for permission as no one will see it.

no, you don't ...........as long as they are not on a concrete base and you don't close the fronts( that would turn them into stables.

Thanks for all replies! have spoken to council and as far as they can tell i wont need planning permission as they arnt on a concrete base.I think it seems to be certain councils that like to cause more work for people:rolleyes:
Trewsers- Gosh you have bad neighbours! Its a good idea about taking a note of things said and who I spoke to so am gonna call back again on monday and get a more detailed confirmation:)
Ill post pics when shelters are up!
x:)

All Councils seem to be different. Ours said that FS's were springing up because of the new Animal welfare Code and there is no way they could keep up.
Now, if a shelter (mobile or fixed) or stable is erected and no one complains, they ignore it. 1 complaint and they request you have PP. They have no differenciation between FS or stable. A FS can have doors, windows, a store room, hardcore floor etc etc.
If however, the construction is within the curtilage of your home then PP is not required.

It does vary a lot. I have a friend who has to 'substantially relocate' her mobile shelter every 28 days. Same council tried to make another friend use green rubber on her manege so it blended with the fields. Just glad I am the other side of the district boundary!
