i only ask because there are two retired ponies near me and there seems to be a regular stream of vistors with carrier bags of bread. i thought bread was too stodgy for them(probably wrong, i usually am:rolleyes: ) i was also thinking about all the peelings from my sunday lunch. can i put them in a bucket mixed with their speedibeet

i give both to star but bread only occasionaly because its not something he's really designed to eat, plus he gets frustrated when it sticks to his teeth!

I won't feed bread the starch is not good for them and bread can cause skin problems in horses. I do feed veggie peelings but not from onions or potatoes as these are poisionous.

Their digestive systems aren't made for bread - it releases starch in the wrong part of the gut.

However many seem to feed it & get away with it, recalling previous threads on NR (and my Dad's working horses - a lady approached him in his field and told him off for that! oops - good for her, lol. About 40 years ago that is).

Ours have just a slice broken on their feed very occasionally because they go bonkers for it, like most naughty treats.

I imagine carrier bags of bread is a definate no-no.

Bread as a treat, that all, one slice once in a while. Veg peelings are fine, in small quantities, every day, not huge quantities of tattie peelings.

I just cleared the veggie patch, Charlie and Norman had great fun with a load of sprout stalks and tops, and cabbage plants.

when 2 of mine were in a field near a village they got many gifts of peelings and bread etc

they were quite picky about which offerings they'd eat and i'd often find a pile of unwanted presents like cabbage leaves and potato peelings

lol i used give horses bread when i spend the whole day up at the stables and had sandwiches and so gave the abit of the crust to my horse occasionally.

best to stick to the foods like carrots and apples though as a treat

Many years ago - when I was broke! - I fed two small Native ponies for two winters exclusively on a mix of veg peelings and beet pulp.

I "whizzed" all the potato peelings in Mum's blender/chopper into tiny bits, then rinsed away most of the starch. As long as it was fresh, it did them no harm at all.

In fact, both ponies lived to a ripe old age - one 29 and the other 28!!

Bread I'm not so keen on - just a little once in a while.

I know some hunt servants horses that were feed on bread, sugar beet and grass nuts. The hunted hard twice a week, looked fantastic, and are still hunting and looking great in their early 20's!!!!! Bread does work as a weight gain one of our hunters had gone off when i started working with them, he had loads of bread and within a few weeks looked superb, he was a really fussy eater but would never refuse the bread.

One Winter my ponies also wintered out on bread waste from a local bakery, plus a scratch of grass they came out the best ive seen them winter that year, even with ad lib hay and feed i havent seen them as well!!!!! Mine turn their noses up at potato peelings, but love veg peelings!!!!

i don't feed bread - it's very hard to digest and is too high in starch - but daily veg anf fruit peelings, except onions (poisonous according to a vet i once asked) and potato peelings (like with bread, it's too starchy and indigestable to be healthy).

i once heard that carrot leaves were a herb rarely used yet valuable!

Aren't potatoes the same plant family as deadly nightshade? hence we don't eat them when green either.
