I have citronella oil already but I'm begrudging paying out £12 a bottle for fly spray for it to last 3 weeks (I have been liberal with it).

So I'm going to try and make my own - any recipes that are tried and tested are welcome !

I use the oil neat - but te stuff from b&q/supermarket (in bbq picnic type aisle!) about £3 for a litre And put straight in a spray bottle :)

Isn't that the flammable one for oil burners???

I make my own with the pure oil, tea, white vinigar and a squirt of washing up liquid. Sometimes I put a few drops of lavender oil in too as its antiseptic and smells lovely

My YO makes his own out of tea, eucalyptus oil and some other stuff, but I just bought the Horse & Pony Direct stuff. It's pretty good actually and not too pricy.

Don't quite know the correct quantities but would say maybe a litre bottle with a teaspoon or so of citronella, teaspoon of eucalyptus, same of tea tree, chuck in a small bottle of Avon Skin so soft and fresh (which has a fly repellent in it) and top up with water.

I've been using Naff Off with Deet, but when that runs out I'm going to try the above.

I sometimes use citronella oil and water mixed. The Avon skin so soft is good for midges but be careful in the sun as its a dry oil and can cause sunburn.

Yes but you need very little of it - should only be a light spray. Stays on better as its oil based.

Be careful of dettol as mine had bad reaction to it and I hardly used any in my mixture!

I use skin so soft by avon for midges but not in the sunshine as can burn cos an oil as said but then in the sun I use avon insect repellant which is for mosquitos and deer ticks and is the only thing i find keeps the cleggs away pretty good

I covered myself in it today and I didnt get bitten once on my hack

There have been recipes recently on our local FaceBook rider pages. I cant vouch for any of them - plus there is a warning that before spraying you should test a small patch on your horse first in case there is a bad reaction.

Our RS ponies get sprayed with a commercial brand but it doesnt always give much help. So I read these recipes with interest and hope the original authors wont mind my posting here for info.
I dont think anyone has mentioned the cold tea on this thread. But that seems a popular base.

Some give quantities - others dont.

Cold well stewed tea, malt vinegar, citronella oil, lavender oil added works well with it!

2 litres cold tea, 4 caps of dettol, litre of cider vineger, 4 tea spoons of following oils citronella, lavender, tea tree, eucalyptus is amazing even use on myself

Some people use Avon as mentioned here.
Either the oil or others use the green bottle skin so soft , moisturiser ? Use about 1 part skin so soft x 5 parts water , half capful dettol . Put in a spray bottle ( one that you'd use to spray water on plants ) shake & spray . You might want to try a test patch on your horse . It's worked great on mine

Or avoiding Dettol.
800 mls water.
Teatree x 10 drops.
Peppermint x 5 drops.
Cedarwood x 10 drops.
Citronella x 15 drops.
Lemon Grass x 10 drops.
Eucalyptus x 10 drops.

Then mix with two teaspoons of "Avon Skin So Soft".

I know I am a bit late with this post, but I have been using Valley View fly repellant, it is made from spanish herbs that have fly repellent qualities..My boy seems to only have the odd fly on him (and we have midges, crabflies the lot in our fields) where as the other two are covered..
Maybe he doesnt attract them as much? or maybe it works?..

I think the colour of the horse plays a huge part.

Mine is a few spot, so an off white with a few spots. He doesn't get that many flies on him. The black mare over the track from him is absolutely covered in them all the time, bless her.

I do feed apple cider vinegar which they say deters flies as it alters the PH of the blood. Am not sure, but it doesn't do him any harm and for a pale horse he has a very gleamy coat.

I did make my own fly recipe - similar to above and it was pants.

The two I rate are Effol, but better than that is the Powerphase.

Interestingly - if you are as sad as me - Bucas did a study - think someone on here cut and pasted it??

Zebra stripes (which their new rug is) attracted the least amount of flies, grey/white the second least, bay/chestnut the third least and black the most.

They are of course producing a zebra stripe fly rug .......... but equally, Tobes attracts less flies than his darker counterparts.

I make my own and it does really well compared to the shop brought ones and it is cheap.

Tea bags stewed in hot water for 30 minutes top up with 3 ltrs of cold and remove the bags
Citronella 2 x bottles
white vinegar half a bottle
4 good squirts of green washing up liquid
some other stuff I got from the diy shop but the names slips my mind :sluggish:

It has been ace this year
