Dun x cremello = ??? How do I find out?

What are the possible foal colors that would result from a dun mare being bred to a cremello stallion? I haven't been able to find out much and it's often contradictory. My friend just had her mare bred, and we are all excited about the foal.

And help much appreciated!

Is the dun true dun or is it buckskin? And what's the base colour of the dun (chestnut, black, bay etc).

If it's true dun, you'll have a 50/50 chance of dun and cream dilute is guaranteed.

If buckskin, there's no chance of dun as such, and you'll have 50/50 chance of a single cream dilute and the same odds of a double dilute. (I think; tis late and my maths is not great!)

She's a true dun with the solid black dorsal stripe...she also has some of the 'tiger' markings. Hmmm...how can one know what the base color of the dun is or would that have to be tested through her dna?

Alos what does the cream dilute do to the dun coloring?

We got a mucky dark bay from a dun going grey and a grey, with grey and silver dun as daddy's parents and black and grey as mum's parents!

He's already going grey as a foal.....'tis a really grubby colour.....and , with what looks like blue eyes!

2 weeks old and still got blue eyes, all his friends have brown!

Where did he come from then??? the milk an must have been busy!

Dun acts differentl;y on different base colours. So (for example) dun on black gives you grullo, dun on chestnut givves you red dun, dun on bay gives yellow dun aand so on.

Since your foal is guaranteed to be cream dilute anyway, if you get dun on top of that, you'll see further dilution. An example is dun on palomino - it's known as dunalino.

Dun Central Station is a fantastic site with loads of pictures, including some of dun on cream dilutes. Definitely worth a read
