my horses all live in one field, no other horses around. they live out and we pick up poo everyday. im worming on sunday, a week late...naughty mummy! questions:

is it ok to feed after?
im leaving them out after worming, when is it ok to ride annie again properly?
anything else i need to know.....?

Yep you can feed after, ride straight away too as far as I know, I wormed all mine with equimax yesterday and rode Cassie straight after.

I would have used pramox but equimax was a pound cheaper, only needed 2 tubes for 4 ponies though, excellent!

ahh beauty! i had to get 3!! chancer was wormed with the pramox in december. so he is due again this weekend. my girls were due last weekend, they have not had pramox yet. so lady in cornwall farmers said to just do all with pramox this weekend so everyone is in time with each other...beauty

Riding and feeding is OK but I would personally stable for at least 12 hours after worming but careful poopicking within 12 hours of turnout is probably the same.

Remember Equimax doesn't tackle encysted redworm but Equest Pramox does ...worth an extra £1 in my book.

Ideal :)

eml - Really? Can't get the staff nowadays, they told me in the tack shop they were exactly the same!

Having said that, 2 months ago they all had a 5 day course of Panacur equine guard which definately does tackle encysted redworm so at least they're okay for now! (as you don't worm for that all year round do you?)

which one you go to laura, in pool??

thanks eml. we poo pick everyday so will do that. they wont know whats hit them if they are in overnight!

You can feed, ride and turn out immediately. If you used Pramox in December you shouldn't be using again for six months, you need to alternate with Equest. Should really have been Equest in December with Pramox now though.

well im doing pramox now. like i say one has been done with the pramox in december, he has had a week off from this, ie will be 14 weeks after hes been wormed with it. its ok to give it to him again now? only doing it to get him inline with mine and owner suggested to do it, and lady in shop did too.

yes laura, stick with cornwall farmers, im there nearly every lunchtime!!

Equest is moxidectin, Equest Pramox is moxidectin and praziquante

http://www.fortdodge.eu/products.asp?id=2

Both Equest products kill encysted red worm, Equest Pramox also kills tape worm where as Equest doesn't. The instructions included say not to turn out for 3 days, but to be honest I have never understood that as manure goes on the heap either way where water can wash the drug any where.

Rotation of Equest products is suggested http://www.nutrecare.co.uk/special_detail.asp?prod_id=1836 but the Fort Dodge link I gave earlier implies that either can be used 4 times per year.

As long as the manure is picked up in the period immediately after they are wormed and before they are returned to that area, it doesnt really matter where they are, in or out.

sfs, i see now, get what your saying. te field is big so they tend to move around it a lot. hopefully wont go back to the same place twice in one day!

Thats not what I meant.

If your horses usually live out, then it is fine to turn out after worming as long as the pasture is cleaned after they are wormed and before they return to it.

Horses WILL return to the same place, they habitually soil the same area so as not to spoil too much grazing.

Equally, if you have a stable kept horse you need to be hot on picking up droppings as you see them in the period after worming your horse.

well i will only be up there once or so in the day to clear the droppings (which the droppings get cleared EVERYDAY anyway), so they better not return to the same place as im not following them around all day with the poop scoop!! :p

ALL droppings need to be removed before horses are returned to the field - otherwise there is little point of worming your horse.

feels like im going round in circles! ALL droppings are cleared everyday and at the weekend they get put out on a clean field, there is only so much i can do and i am not following my horses around for 12 hours to clear their poo up as they do it! gosh, wish i never asked now, i dont know how iv coped in the past! anyway im not continuing this as il just be repeating myself. thanks all for your help :D

I'm finding this thread confusing now, pick up the poo after they are wormed and before they return to the area, isn't that the same thing? Surely someone who poo picks everyday shouldn't have a problem, especially as horses won't choose to eat where their droppings are.

How about horses who don't have their poo picked up, eg owners who harrow instead, as long as they are all wormed regularly they shouldn't have worms, right?

I mean if my horse is stabled at night and wormed, i'd muck out in the morning, what's wrong with that?

Sorry, but never heard such strict advice on worming before

All of mine live out 24/7. Field poo picked.
When wormed I just turn out in rested section of field.
Surely any worms that are passed after worming are dead.
