Boring SQP person alert !!!

The amount of Praziquantel in Pramox means that the residue in the horses droppings are detrimental to other animals be it the pet dog or a seagull etc. This is the reason we recommend keeping them in. If you used Equitape (praziquantel only) or Equimax ( Praziquantel and Ivermectin) you will see the amount of the Praz... is alot less and therfore not so deadly to other animals.

Also an SQP should be advising to limit Equest or Pramox to once a year dosing as the ingredient Moxidectin has no resistance at present and over use of it will cause resistance eventually.

Personally I would Equest in December and use either Equitape (after a Fecal Egg Count) or Equimax in March for the Tapeworms. If using The FEC method and it is clear then the Equitape will cover the tapes that are not normally picked up with this method.

If your horses are all in a field together with no others and you poo pick every day, why not have them worm counted? You may only need to worm them for tapeworms. Not necessarily cheaper as you have to pay for the worm counts but at least you are not pumping chemicals into them which may not be needed.

Ok hopefully can be of some help here.

If you read the instructions and guidance for equest pramox it states that horses should be kept in for 3 day's after using it.This is because there is not yet sufficient data to support how much damage pramox does to the environment,horses grazing,other wildlife etc.So what S F S is saying (I think??) is that you can leave your horses out if you need to but you must clear all droppings as you see them if possible,and/or move them around to other grazing (section bits off maybe??),so they are not grazing for any longer than necessary where there have been droppings done since having the wormer.Does that make sense??

I recently moved yards and had to pramox my lad (he was done end of december also with pramox BTW,and athough not ideal I did him again beginning of march with pramox,shouldn't really,but he was fine so shouldn't worry too much about your lad),I ended up stabling him after I realised he shouldn't be turned out really,especially as I was a livery and there were others to consider etc.I didn't stable him for 3 day's,but he was kept in for about 48 hours,and then out on a small patch of land just for a few hours and then in again,(comes in at night).Grazing was then cleared of all poo,and he was also the only one on it anyway.

What you are doing will *probably* be ok,but if it was me and it was an option I would keep them in.If not possible (not sure if you have stables??),then perhaps turn out on restricted grazing,and pick up poo more often,and then move to a different part of the grazing when worming is all dealt with??
