Does anyone know the latest on the equine flu outbreak? Is there somewhere that records new cases? I would like to know what the latest news is but I don’t know where to look.
AHT normally updates it every time a new case is identified, so if it hasn't been updated since the 8th I would presume there aren't any more new onesThat document was only published on the 8th March, so I wonder if there have been more cases recently?

AHT is the main testing lab at the moment, they are doing testing for free so most vets are sending their samples there. Rossdales lab are also testing some and they report to AHT any positive results. I guess other labs are possibly running tests but I would think it would be in all their interests to update AHT even though there is no legal control on it as EF isn't a reportable diseaseHow to the AHT get notified of cases? Do vets have a legal duty to report them?
Nope, not at all notifiable. Neither is strangles or any of the others we horse owners worry about. So it isn't a notifiable disease as such? Therefore we may not know the number of true cases.
"serious" diseases are notifiable, but the common endemic ones aren't. Bit like flu in humans isn't but other more serious ones are. They probably should be. When I had mumps they had to officially record it and I had to tell everyone I had been in contact with. It should be the same with horses.
Strangles can be pretty serious though."serious" diseases are notifiable, but the common endemic ones aren't. Bit like flu in humans isn't but other more serious ones are.
It is, but the fatality rate is very low and it is something that is always present here. Compared to something like rabies which has been eliminated from the UK and is almost always fatal, it's no so serious.Strangles can be pretty serious though.
Few have quarantine facilities, and even fewer around here insist on any kind of quarantine of new comers. Rossdales just put in new intensive care/quarantine units, way over the other side of the car park. Each stable has its own connected nursing suite so nothing is transferred between the units.Maybe we should stop importing horses from Ireland? Or at least take precautions when they are. I wouldn't like to have a 'recently imported' one on our yard unless I knew it was clear of EI. Reading the quarantine instructions that our vets shared on their FB page, I would think very few leisure yards have the facilities to properly quarantine any newcomers, ours certainly doesn't.
