Can anyone enlighten me as to the scoring of the dressage section in eventing. I have use of a horse at the moment that has dressage scores on his record from early 30's up to late 40's, but mainly in the late 30's in dressage but I don't really know how this relates to British Dressage scores.

He has a total of 28 BE points.

i'm definately no expert on BD, but it is scored on percentages right ? eventing dressage is scored on penalties, so the lower the better. early 30's is a pretty good score i would of thought.
this is what the BE website says
"Once the rider and horse have completed their Dressage test, the marks are totted up and any errors of course deducted, which is then converted to penalty points. The marks are converted to a percentage of the maximum possible score, multiplied by the coefficient for that test, then subtracted from 100."
but someone please correct me if i'm wrong ! :o

If that's the case, earlier on in his career he got several results in the 20's with one 20 spot on for dressage.....laterly he has been scoring mid 30's....different rider though.

working out BE dressage scores is a bit tricky, as quoted above they percentage and then use a coefficiant before subtracting from 100.

Essentially though, it is a penality mark so the lower the better. In BD, the score is a percentage - the higher the better.

What level, do you know? The 20's is a very good mark. I'd expect his flatwork to be very well established then.

The aim for people is to 'finish on the dressage score' by going clear around the showjumping and xc phases. As they collect penalities for refusals, knock downs, time etc, then that is added to the dressage score. The competitor with the lowest penalty score at the end of all 3 phases wins... =]

The 20 was at N (novice?) level.

most of the mid 30's are at IN or I level

Laterly he has been competing OPN

Dressage score is calculated as per BD by working out the marks gianed as a percetage of the total available. For BE this is then subtracted from 100 to give the penalties. ie a score of 70% would recive a penalty score of 30.

Now here is the tricky bit. Around 2002/3 BE change the way dressage penalties were calcultaed to the present form. Prior to that the dressage score would be 3/5ths of the percentage that wasn't gained.

An example of this would be a 50% score in the dressage would be 50 penalties under new system but only 30 under old system.

This can lead to confussion when viewing historic records from pre/post the change as it appears the horse suddenly dropped in dressage performance.

His scores in the 20's are likely to be from before this change over date...soe his mid 30's scores are likely to be the most reliable as to his ability.....
