Lunnon, innit?
I fell off going round the park this morning...Actually it was probably more of a very ungraceful slither down the neck and shoulder at trot! We were walking round, horses quite unsettled by the wind but coping well. A horse on my left spooked and went into my mount (who has sight problems anyway!) who promptly went from standstill into canter. I was completely unbalanced and unseated, forward on his neck and from there gravity took over!

Luckily the horse was grazing nonchantly nearby and hadn't taken off down Park Lane so I got back on after a leg up (that is a feat of nature in itself for a very stiff rider like myself!) and after my legs had stopped shaking - I think it must have been from the shock perhaps - continued round on the ride with no more problems.

But gosh I am hurting now! I landed on the base of my spine and slightly above it. I am planning on having a hot bath asap and am currently sitting with lots of cushions, but does anyone have any tips for helping me out? Should I try and keep moving or just rest?

You could try putting something cold on it. A hot bath is great for relaxation but it does make blood vessels expand and in turn can cause swelling to get worse. Although I have to say I always prefer the hot bath option lol (of course with lots of bubble bath.

Anti-inflammatories like nurofen could help. They stop the muscles swelling up.

Hot bath with liberal Radox is definetely the way to go! I think you are probably best off keeping movement to the minimum at the mo and then move on to some light stretches so you don't seize up. A nice hot water bottle on the sore bits will also help. Do you ride in Hyde Park? If so, lucky you!

Ouch, I had a fall in November and ended up with one almighty bruise that took weeks and weeks to go. White horse linament is excellent for bruises as is the old hot/cold compress. Best of all, a big glass of something alcoholic, some pain killers, a good book and soak in the tub.

Homeopathic remedies are really good for bruising and stiffness. Try some Arnica: that will help with the bruising and stiffness.

You can get both cream to rub on externally and tablets to take. Get the 30c high potency ones and take two every two hours for 4 doses and then two three times daily for 3/4 days. (Boots or Holland & Barratts)

If you have a 'wheat bag' heat that up in the microwave and sit with it on the affected area. Take it to bed with you also to sooth the affected parts and help you to sleep.

Hope the discomfort soon goes. Take Care. O...:)

Hi
Most chemists do these most amazing heat pads that you can put on in most places- I had a lower back injury and although very:o to tell anybody this- they come in pant form- well look like a nappy actually:eek: and they keep heat for at least 6 hours and really work:):):)

Wow what a dilemma - back pain or a nappy!
Hope there's no teenagers look in on this mature riders section, they'll all be horrified at what life's got in store:D
On a more serious note - hope you're feeling better soon x

Thought I had replied to you all last night

But it appears it must have got lost in the ether!

I had a lovely hot bath last night and a medicinal glass of wine! Slept well too, which always helps. My neck is a bit sore today but I think after today everything should ease off. My sister is bringing me some of her arnica to try tonight.
Thanks to everyone, the last time I fell off was when I learnt to ride first time round (a long time ago!)

first 24 hours, ice....after that, alternate heat and cold. The old YM suggested to me when I fell off Queen and bruised the HECK out of my hip to use thermaflex.....it's a linament gel for horses (not sure if they sell it by you??). I took anti-inflammatory over the counter pills (Motrin by name, here), used the linament, and RESTED. I coud hardly move for weeks! Once the 24 hours is up (rough time estimate), feel free to soak in a nice, hot tub....or even a hot-tub! Just be careful to heal decently before subjecting your body to more abuse, even if it means doing nothing more than grooming and basic groundwork (and spoiling) of your horse for awhile!!

Yep, hot bath, then cold pack, arnica tablets ( a great medicine chest essential) ibuprofen, LARGE glass of red and a bar of chocolate:D The later does nothing for the pain but makes me feel better!:p
