I would really reccommend leg wraps and neck bands - they're much more at the level a dirver is normally looking, and the leg straps move with the horse, so are very hard to miss... I used to have a reflective sheet and tail band too, but the leg wraps and neck bands are the most effective, IMO.

I have a feeling you might change your mind when you have your own horse to protect. I'm verging on the obsessive about making sure that we can both be seen. Plus its always good re: insurance that you have made every effort to be seen/safe- as these insurance companies have a habit of trying to wriggle out of paying up!

You may well be right - I suppose I can't really tell without one of my own. Plus I have bad enough compulsive shopaholic tendencies for my cats - imagine what I'd be like with a giant horsey beastie to pamper and buy stuff for!

You can dress up all you like, if the car driver isn't paying attention, heater on, radio up loud, comfy seat, fag in hand, phone in the other......Might as well be in his own front room in front of the telly, they will still hit you.

Wally thats just bought back a really amusing memory. About 2 years ago I was hacking down Main Street in our village when a car drove slowly alongside me, I looked down to say thanks only to see he was stripped from the waist down and lets say, having a go

Either it was for my benefit or he was really making himself comfy and didnt see me and I should be grateful he didnt hit me. (Imagine that in the accident report!!! )

i actually don't find i see leg bands at all - especially if i am coming up behind the horse - the tail is in the way and i don;t see the front legs at all. tail guard, or a rug with a tail flap, and a tabard and hat things are what i find most visible from a driving point of view.

Last winter I was coming back onto the farm from a long hack on a bridlepath, it was dark and as I rode onto the farm, wearing my flashing hi viz tabard, and horse was wearing all her hi viz too, my friend in her car nearly had a heart attack, she though she could see a headless rider coming towards her, I now wear a hi viz strip on my hat !

I couldn't view it on my rubbish computer! I always wear hi viz gear tho - and when I move to my own land later this year, even tho it will all be off road hacking I intend to be decked out like a Christmas tree! hehehe, I'm getting a yellow hi viz coat for the winter - I don't believe you can wear enough to be honest. Getting a sheet for Joe too - (storm is scared of exercise sheets). Don't want to not be seen (plus they'll be shooting on my land so don't want to get mistaken for food!!!)
