Just wondering really...what general supplements are you all feeding? What i mean is anything that is not for a specific reason ie: joint supplements for arthritic horses etc....

ie: do any of you feed garlic year round and if so, what benefits do you see?
do any of you feed vit & min supps and again, what benefits do you see?
Same for things like oil, seaweed, any herbs etc etc...
Are there any supps you feed as a preventative measure?

mines 22 and has had old injuries so shes on:
msm & glucosamine for her joints
fenugreek to keep her appetite up
cleavers to reduce leg swelling (shes recovering from an injury)
just starting her on magnesium supplement today

I feed and have fed a lot of herbs to horses depends on whats wrong as herbs act on different parts of the body.
seaweed is great for skin / hair
nettle as a blood tonic
Devils claw/marigold/cleavers/meadowsweet for old joints/stiffness
garlic for breathing problems/coughs

theres some great book sout there on feeding herbs to horses.
With regard to preventative - I also feed vegetable oil or sunflower oil if a horse coat is dry or when they start to shed/change of season
I feed garlic in summer to help with flies.
I also use collovet if the horse has been run down / needs a boost

Both of mine are on Benevit as they don't get the recommended amount of feed - LU's belly would probably hit the floor while Jim may well explode! They also get some cooked linseed meal because it's brill for coat & skin.

Jim also gets Cortaflex, U-Gard Plus & D-Itch. The last is something he only gets while the midges are around so when this tub finishes he won't get any more for a while.

I'm currently not feeding a broad spectrum supplement and haven't noticed any problems since I stopped. My two get a full dose of Equimins Hoof Mender which appears to be helping their bare feet, salt, magnesium oxide (again for their feet, but they're also eating a lot of alfalfa which is high in calcium), a dash of salt and a dose of cortaflex, which is mainly preventative. They also get a bit of linseed, seaweed and brewers yeast via their feed for what that's worth :)

Kia gets

Feel good 30 hoof supplement which also does skin and coat, he gets the recommended amount of spillers pony cubes every day which has a vit and min supplement in it but before I fed these he got equivite original.

He gets corn oil for his joints and his coat and it also helps me bulk him up without feeding too much protein or starch. And he gets devils claw root for his leg that was injured which is working a treat!!!

Thanks for the replies everyone.
It was just something i was curious about....at my last yard, everyone fed supplements like they were going out of fashion....at the new yard, no one really feeds any supplement at all.

My girly doesn't get any supps at all and doesn't seem to be suffering because of it....but there's always that part of me that thinks I *should* be feeding something, I think mainly cos it feels weird not adding anything to her feeds!!

Hon gets lucern, oats (rolled) and sunflower seeds. That's it. I am thinking I should put her on a joint supp, as she's 18 .. but I dunno.

Oh and I am putting her on Electro's during the summer too as she sweats HEAPS.

Currently my mare is getting fed 2-3 times a week only, when she comes onto the yard. There's enough grass for her to be happy out 24/7 at present and I have no pressing need to bring her in each day as she's out of work so she just comes in so I can brush her and check her over under lights a couple of times.

Anyway, she gets a bit of salt and a 15ml scoop of CalMag when she does come in but that's it. She's fat, shiny (when not covered in mud) and seems to be very happy. Her hooves look better than ever and she has a gleam in her eye.

She has just had a course of Hyonate injections, which essentially is a huge dose of joint supplement (Hyaluronic Acid) and when she starts coming in on a daily basis for hay I'll add a glucosamine & MSM supplement but I have no plans to start her on a general balancer/supplement unless she shows a need for it.

Both toby and kezzie get selenevite E and garlic; the selenevite is an allround supplement and the garlic for it's general health benefits and coz they LOVE it ;) kezzie also gets NAF mint as a natural digestive aid. He's prone to mild colic but the mint *touch wood* seems to be working.

When toby came to me he had a mineral deficiency (he was eating horse poo!) so i've always kept him on a general supplement. Kezzie for similar reasons, he's young and i want to make sure he's getting all he needs.

EquusHealth Winter bloom&Summer shine - Got a cariety of herbs and things which is good for body, inside and out
Cider Vinegar - for teenage joints
Oil - if its cold for extra calories
Linseed pellets - for coat/weight gain

ours gets a scoop of easy breath as he's never had to be in before at night but hte yard we are on insists - and he has mild copd

corteflex as he is a tad stiff in his nearside rear hip - nowt wrong - we've had it looked at, x rayed etc - just stiff for about 5 mins and then it loosens up and he's fine! corteflex has "cured" that

general vit supplement as the grazing isn't stunning and neither is our hay - and he only has a handful of chaff to mix in his supplements plus about 15 cubes of beet (soaked of course!), about a small handful of cubes and 2 carrots so not really enough to make sure he gets all his vits

he seems happy on that lot!

dawn is on soya oil as she's out 24/7 and isn't the youngest of horses. it helps keep the weight on and helps joints and general coat condition.
she is also on XP triple action to aid digestion and general health (thank you EB :p) now she's getting on in years it seemed appropriate to give her a boost :)
