Can anyone give me their thoughts on the best make/type of girths that are out there? I'm looking for the most comfortable for the horse.
What does Heather recommend for her saddles?

I find that the best is just the traditional cottage craft girth. they have come along way over the past few years to help start any problems in the girth area. There is a big difference between my most recent girth and the first one I bought for Maverick. If you want to make it comfy-er, just add a girth sleeve.

I LOVE my Atherston Girth!! I find the leather is really soft and doesn't ever pintch and I love the fact that its padded. It doesn't cause them to sweat as much as others I've had either. Their easier to clean and they look great to! Their fairly pricey at £40 but there worth it and I'd never use anything else!

Kay Humphries likes a good quality leather girth; also lampwick; the Stubben Trevira string girth; in cotton, the Aerborn type with stitching across the width of the girth rather than those with the centre stitching/tape, if you see what I mean.

You need to find a girth that spreads the pressure across its width rather than one that concentrates it in a narrow area. And of course all girths should be kept spotlessly clean.

Also try to avoid girths that make the horse sweaty if possible - not just because the sweat isn't good for the skin, but because they make the area slippy, which doesn't help if you've already got a problem with slippage.

Last one - if you use any sort of dressage girth it's very important to make sure it's long enough, so that the buckles don't interfere at all with the horse's elbow.

I have a throwgood atherstone girth. It is always soft and supple and really easy to clean you just put it in a bucket of water and the sweat comes off.
