Right - is anyone else sick of their washable half-chaps fading in the wash!!!!

I have 2 black pairs - both are now faded and have been washed a max of 2/3 times. I just don't want to put them in the wash again - they'll turn grey!!! i can't wear jods with black on them cause it looks slightly daft, and its bad with the boots too! but then i'm walking around with mud marks on them that just won't brush off!!! - they are the suede type ones (shires and loveson)

I was wondering what the leather half chaps are like. Obviously you can't wash them (or can you?!?) but are they fairly easy to look after, good to wear, durable etc? i've been thinking of investing in a pair if they'd survive well?

The other thing i was thinking about was dying the chaps black again. Anyone else done this?

Help me please!!!! :D

I have some Shires washable half-chaps that faded terribly first time I washed them, dare not wash them again. My daughters Dublin ones haven't faded at all and were washed in the same batch.
I am also thinking of dying them even though they are the contrast ones and i will lose the last trace of pink from the trim (already manky coloured from the colour running)

I would try dyeing them! Dylon from woolworths or other similar stores is very good - I've never tried dyeing chaps, but I have done jeans and it works really well.

Leather gaitors are excellent, especially once they have softened up a bit - but quite pricey. I love mine because I hate long boots and the gaitors will fit over my short yard boots or something even smarter for shows etc.

I didn't think they were that bad until i put on my black jods and went outside

I've got a few black things i was thinking of dying so might give it a go and see what happens and if it all goes wrong then i have an excuse to buy a new pair :p I bought the shires ones that you can change the piping on and the loveson ones are (supposed to be) all black so thats not a problem. hmmm

I going to buy some dylon tomorrow - my mum had suggested it for my black jeans and it dawned on me i could do it to the chaps too, i'll give it a go and see what happens!!! Of course i'll let you all know how it turns out!

I was thinking about gaiters too but the leather chaps seem cheaper but i'm not sure if they'd be any good. (i have problems with long boots too - i break them!)

just an example but i'm not sure if they look a little cheap or is it maybe just the pic? i'd like to see them and try them first!

do you think gaitors would be better, i don't know whether it would be a bit of a waste of my money because i don't compete - only lessons really, although i'd love to have a go at competitions at some point...i'd need a horse first!

Like those! If you are only having lessons i.e. don't have a horse so not at the yard all the time - I reckon they would be great! But I'm the same - love looking in catalogues and on line, but prefer to go and see and try before I buy.

Then when you do get your own horse and start competing (you may have a bit more money then!) you can invest in a nice pair of gaitors!!:D

good idea!

Its a bit annoying though as none of the horsey shops i can get to stock shires (one has the odd thing in but not sure about those half chaps) - hopefully they'll at least have something similar :)

Definately going to dye the old ones and perhaps ask for some new fancy leather ones for xmas....or even better some money for new horsey stuff heehee! Don't have the money just now, times are hard for us students :p

cheers for the help and will let you know how the dying process turns out!

I have suede half chaps and love them, have had them about 4 years now and have never needed to wash them, the mud just brushes off when dry and when the suede starts too shine i just give them a quick buff with sand paper and they are like new:D

what about neoprene half chaps?

I had some soft leather ones, they lasted ages but looked a bit tatty after a couple of years.

Tbh the mud just seems ingrained in them now!!! I have tried brushing it off and most does come off but there are still marks that only seem to come out with washing. Once i've dyed them i will invest in a slightly tougher brush (i have been using an old pet brush so quite soft bristles) and see if this helps!

hmmmm neoprene - what are they like? I've heard of them and seen photos but its difficult to tell what they are like from the pics!
