I'm planning/saving for a big holiday there in a couple of years time :D :D

Has anyone got any recommendations/advice/must see things to do.

Top of the list for me is whale watching so the rest of the trip will be worked around when is best for that. And I would quite like to have a ride on an Icelandic pony too :)

Any suggestions of things not to be missed?

There are several really good riding holiday organisations in Iceland, Ishestar is the biggest, They have good quality tack and a horse to suit everyone, Some of the smaller farms can be flying by the seat of your pants. I went to one that had tack that was falling apart and shoes that were verging on cruelty.

Go on the FaceBook Icelandic horse page and ask for recommendations.

There are many whale watching trips that operate all over Iceland, Husavík in the north has lots of whale watching boats. If you go when it's dark at night you can see the northern lights, Go and play on the glaciers, Go up the side of a volcano and you can go inside one too. There is something in Iceland different every day, There's Gulfoss, Europe's biggest waterfall which is breathtaking,, Geysir the great big geyser, Hot tubs and hot out door swimming pools in every town.

I've been :) I went on a specialist trip to photograph birds, but we also went to Jokulsarlon which is worth a trip (http://icelagoon.is/), and Gulfoss which again is worth seeing. Its very expensive, but its a magical place with really nice people.

I've been to Iceland
We did the blue lagoon, whale watching trip, Icelandic pony trek, and hired a car and did the volcano scenic tour drive
Loved it
Would definitely go back

This sounds like exactly the sort of trip I'm going for!

My daughter just took her family and some friends on an Icelandic trip which she organised herself using the net.
This is only one person's experience but may be useful.
The whale watching was a priority like some of you have said. The weather was so rough, and the passengers so sea sick that the boat turned back, but as compensation, on another day the group did get taken to see a great variety of whales in a more sheltered bay location.
The puffin watching trip was cancelled due to the same very bad weather.
They did ride Icelandic horses - a two hour trail ride - my daughter (who is no light weight) rode too and all her kids were radiant with happiness. I confess I did feel very pleased that we had given our grandchildren riding lessons when they were younger. Contrary to what I thought, one doesnt have to do an all day hack to get to ride Icelandic horses (which would be too much for my OH). Tho the same outfit did provide these for tourists who wanted. The yard had over 100 horses, with safety hats, safety stirrups, clothing for riders and the tack looking in good condition. Daughter told me there are lots of places, depending where one stays in Iceland. She said she chose carefully and it was very good indeed.
Some of the group ate some (to me) strange food including guillemot, puffin, whale and horse. I didnt know people in Iceland ate horse meat. It is eaten mostly in Catholic countries.
I hope to get some pics and details but it wont be for a month or so.
But I hope this helps you Ale.
