I never really used hoof oil but then I started using one more recently (effenol however you spelll it that one anyway!) The farrier came and suggested I use more hoof oil as her feet were dry, odd I thought as I have been using it more recently. So do i use it or not? I've seen mixed opinions. If I shouldnt usde it what should I use and if I should use hoof oil which do you recomend?

Thanks :D

most hoof oils will do more damage than good, effol is one of the only ones on the market, that is a moisteriser, aswell as good for thrush etc aswell.

kevin bacon make an hoof oil thats fab, i prefure it to effol. personnally, i tend to use cornercresin rubbed in all over the hoof, ok it does make them grow quicker, but the difference is amazing, also because of the extra growth, i dont tend to get cracks/splitting on the hoof or around nail holes, i still have my horses shod around every 7 weeks.

My farrier was here this morning. He put Kevin Bacons hoof ointment on everyone and recommended that I get it - so I've been on ebay and its on its way

On the subject of Hoof Oil - how do you remove spilled oil on clothes?

I spilled it on my expensive trackie bottom and the stain wont move it a black patch with a little splashes on the other leg.

Thanks in advance for removing oil out of clothes tips. :D

Hooves are water based and oil and water don't mix so the last thing you need to moisturise feet is oil! Kevin Bacon's is good, but my favourite is Right Step.

I use hoof oil once or twice a week in dry weather, dont know if it does any good but makes me feel better.

If there is no dew on the ground in the morning or if he is in at night, I hose his feet a lot, when I hose him for the hot weather.

Seldom have any problems.

Hoof oil should only be used on special occasions such as shows. However, a Product like Effol is fine and will help retain natural moisture. Saying that, the best you can do is stand your horse in water for ten minutes daily.:D

echo that. our laminitic's feet got very brittle with her being in, so we added a straw strip by her door and soaked the straw with water. fairly improved her feet :) i tend to use hoof moist if i want to apply something topical, and the lidl hoof dressing they had in a while ago was also pretty good!
