hey everyone,

i went to a jumping show today i wont say were but i was horrified at the behavor of the girls!! i went to watch my friend she was doing the 2nd class but i couldnt watch untill she went in !! 3 horses fell over where people were flying round turning far to tight ..it was horrible 2 people fell of because they hadn't done there girths up!! the worst part for me was they were hitting there ponys far to much most of them entered the ring there whips upside down gave them a smack and continuted to constanly kick them ..with spurs on.. and hitting them the whole way around  one off the girls horses refused and she was whipping the horse at the top of its neck by its ears .. the horse was clearly stress while rearing from being pulled hard in the mouth .. i was shocked how a show could be allowed to run like this  my friend decided not to bother and we decided to go home.. iv never been to a show like it even the parents of there children were shouting saying 'faster..faster.' the ponys were smacking there legs on the jumps from going so fast and flat the jumps were really tight and the striding was all wrong!! we sure wont be going there again

is it me over reacting or does this sound wrong to you .. its just iv never seen such behavor at a show..or anywere:( and some of the looks we got from them i was quite intimadated at times ... has anyone else had this at a show..isit just me..

yes i reported it .. not like they seemed interested i just explained what i saw wasnt pleasnt and the horses shouldnt be treated that way... all they said was 'sorry that you felt this way and we will keep an eye out for this behavor'

that was it  ..well i was told by a woman outside there had been complaints and nothing ever gets done about it and she actully kept her horse there! ubelivible (sorry if my spelling is rubbish im a bit tired)

Tbh, when i go to a showjumping show, you see it atleast once or twice, and not to stero-type but its mostly the little kids. Known as 'pot-hunters' in my books, the ones who enter anything from 1,6 to 2,6 on the same day just to win every class when thy're capable of jumping 2,9 and 3ft. The parents are just as bad, and are only interested in the money and winning. It is horrible to wacth tho :(

yh its the kids one of them did 5 classes getting bigger each time the horse was so tired after it was puffing away while he was just whipping and kicking it around !! horrible!

yeah you get tons of them especially showjumping. kids (and tennegers especially) entering every class just for the rosettes. i entered a 2ft class the other week with my mare simply becuase whilst she may jump 3'6 out hunting showjumping is VERY different and she will stop and ahve a look at things. i got a lot of nasty comments from people saying i shouldnt be doing the class i just wnated rosettes etc. in the 2ft class my mare had 1 refusal and there would have been more if it wasnt for the fact i know how to ride her through. i then did the 2'3 class and people were still rude especially when i came 2nd. i know my mares first round is never good thats why i did the 2ft as i dont want to push her too much by jumping too big for ehr. she is only little and i dont appreciate nasty comments about her ability. i know i could be doing 4ft course on another horse but with ehr she is still elarning. jumping 3'6 fence out hunting is very different to jumping a 3'6 course sj. so i get very ****ed off with people, i will sometimes give my mare a slap down the shoulder if she looks as if she will try to refuse and i know thats what works for her she just needs the reassurance from me. im not beating her im reasuring her and her ears go forward so she doesnt hate me for doing it she likes the encouragement. but i hate the people who elt their horse run out obviously 6 strides away and then whack it when it doesnt jump. a lot of local sj has got worse ive found. oops sorry for the essay.

That is just so cruel, i would come home in tears, it makes me thikn of all the horses and pony's out there that get ill treated in such a manner, it is sad, poor horses and what bad parents for egging them on aswell.:(

i was suprised at the parents they were worse than the kids ... i was so angry my friend had to sit me in the car for ages calming me down because i felt so upset ... i would never hit amey and just think of what those poor ponys must do on a daily bacisis!!

see im not against this sorry if i gave that impresstion:) but these were really going at there horses in wasnt a simple tap on the shoulder it was whips turned upside down and smacking them hard across the belly an bum!!!

It is horrible, mainly for us its the little kids, and its a shame. And some of the parents :O I remember once a little girl only tiny about 6-7 was doing a 1,6 clear round, she fell off and was saying to her dad "Im sorry daddy, im so sorry" He was the type of person to hit their kids etc. if they didnt do well - i saw i with his other kids.

Not all kids are like that, if i EVER did that too cash, he would prob do one of his backwords rear bucks and too top it of a verticle rear, i wouldnt dream of that and my dad would prob smack me IF i beat the horse, its for fun, not for winning! when im at a show or w.e i tap his shoulder (he has a hissy fit when you hit your boot) just before the jump or hit my boot, nothing more!

it was more the parents than the kids and thats why they were so bad. some little 8 year old girl forgot the course and needed to turn a circle the mum was shouting saying 'no you silly cow you've a circle your never going to win ridding like that' she was so sad bless her :( it was seeing them hitting those poor horses like that even some of the older riders were hitting there horses!! (so not setting a good example to the younger set) some off those ponys could go so far in the right hands ...but are forced to be owed by such people!

Sadly that sort of thing is all too common. My daughter show jumps and the behaviour of some of the mums (and probably dads too) is totally appalling. My daughter does carry a whip - but if she used it more than once (and that not a real belt or anything) she would be off that horse and out of the ring before you can say - well what ever comes into your mind. It is often the "pot hunters" doing every class. (Plus thats a bit rotton in my mind for the people who really can't jump higher to be out competed and not have a chance.)

My only suggestion is - if you can - find shows which don't permit that sort of behaviour. Pony Club shows are normally OK. You can't use spurs without the permission of your DC and misuse of a whip gets you elminated. Plus the under 2' classes normally bar you from the over 2' classes to stop the younger or less expereicned ones being out competed. British Riding Clubs have similar sorts of rules I think.

In the last few years of jumping we learned which shows are good to go to and which to stay away from - although even the good ones have off days. If you're in surrey / sussex I can offer some reccommendations. Otherwise I can only say - don't give up. Not all parents, kids or shows are that bad!

i am aware that it goes on but this was the worse iv seen almost every ridder was being mean to there horse ... i was just shocked and a bit angry! as i say i dont have any probs with people carrying whips or using them for encouragement its was the fact that were abusing the whips totally and there horses.i would carry a schooling whip with amey when schooling to help with leg aids .. due to her being beaten with it i cant even pick one up!! but thats another story!! it just caught me by suprise:rolleyes:

I've never seen behavior that bad from kids... When I was trying to qualify for the trailblazers finals they would be going hell for leather (and usually having one down :D), but I only ever saw one absolutely leather her pony, and she got asked to leave the ring.
To be honest though, some of the top riders don't set a particularly good example - at our local 'big' bsja show, I've seen one of the highest rated British riders fall off in the warm up ring, then proceed to kick his horse in the chest... then the next horse he was on spooked at something in the ring, cue booting it in the ribs (with spurs) and practically murdering it with the whip all the way round the course

no thats fine i knew what you meant i just wanted to add that i did that to my horse and saw it as acceptable when it is possible some people wouldnt. i hate the kids who boot their horse in the ribs to make it go faster and then yank its back teeth out to turn
